Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago seeks a part-time Veterans Services Specialist to apply specialized knowledge of veterans’ benefits and resources. You will assist veterans, active duty, reserve, and dependents in understanding benefits, enrolling, and transitioning to student life while guiding them to academic success.

Responsibilities

• Meets one-on-one with new and returning military-affiliated students to provide information and explain available campus-based and community services, as well as veteran/military education benefits, to support enrollment and completion of academic goals.
• Guides prospective and continuing students in applying for and understanding federal and state veteran/military education benefits; explains VA programs and reviews documents to assess eligibility.
• Supports students through admissions process; uses enrollment checklist to ensure steps like admissions, benefits, cost review, financial aid, advising, orientation, and referrals are completed.
• Coordinates activities with advising, registrar, financial aid, and other offices to connect students with services that support enrollment and registration in programs.
• Works with staff to certify VA/military benefits and report enrollment status, progress, and academic plans.
• Implements intervention strategies to assist students at risk of losing benefits due to academic performance.
• Advocates for military-affiliated students with college administrators and external parties; mediates issues between students and instructors.
• Partners with external organizations to ensure referrals address factors impacting student success.
• Develops relationships with businesses to provide veterans with employment connections.
• Serves as advisor to campus veteran clubs and associations.
• Develops and implements educational and social events during the year.
