Job summary

Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City, AL seeks a Director of Activities to lead the Activities Department and design recreation programs that support residents’ physical, mental, and psychosocial wellbeing.

You will develop policies, supervise staff, and coordinate with medical and social services to meet individualized care plans. The role requires relevant recreation leadership credentials, two years of college minimum (degree preferred), and experience in healthcare

Qualifications

• Minimum two (2) years of college. Degree preferred.
• Must be a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or a recreational professional licensed by this state and eligible for certification.
• Two (2) years experience in a social or recreation program within the last five (5) years, one (1) of which was full-time in a patient recreation program in a health care setting; or
• Must be a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or
• Must have completed a training course approved by this state.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and interact tactfully with residents, families, staff and the public.
• Must be a member in good standing in the National Association of Social Workers and Academy of Certified Social Workers, Inc.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the Activities Department.
• Ensure an on-going recreation program designed to meet the residents’ needs and well-being.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures for the department.
• Keep abreast of regulations and professional standards and recommend policy changes.
• Recruit, interview, and supervise Activities Department personnel.
• Coordinate with medical staff and social services; arrange transportation for field trips.
• Develop care plans and resident assessments; involve residents and families.
• Maintain records, budget, and cost reports; ensure cleanliness and safety in work areas.
• Attend meetings and continuing education to maintain licensure.
