Job description

Rural Resource Navigator

Make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans, service members and their families while helping strengthen rural Montana communities. Veterans Navigation Network is seeking a compassionate, resourceful and self-motivated Rural Resource Navigator to connect individuals with services that can improve their stability, independence and quality of life.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who understands the unique challenges veterans may face and wants to provide practical, one-on-one support. The successful candidate will build trusted relationships, identify individual needs and help veterans and their families navigate complicated systems and resources.

Location: Miles City, Montana
Status: Full-time, in-person
Pay: $20-$26 per hour

About Veterans Navigation Network

Veterans Navigation Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping service members transition successfully from military service to civilian life. Through resource navigation, intensive case management and advocacy, the organization connects service members, veterans and family members with healthcare, behavioral health, housing, employment, education, legal assistance, suicide prevention, VA benefits and other essential services.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach to service members, veterans, family members, potential volunteers and community members.

  • Use motivational interviewing techniques during intake and follow-up conversations.

  • Help individuals understand available federal and state veterans’ benefits, services and eligibility requirements.

  • Assess each individual’s needs, abilities, challenges and personal goals.

  • Create individualized goal, recovery and safety plans.

  • Connect individuals with healthcare, behavioral health, housing, employment, education, legal and homeless-service resources.

  • Assist with access to VA disability compensation, survivor benefits, discharge upgrades and other veteran-related programs.

  • Maintain accurate case notes, records, reports and correspondence using the organization’s case management system.

  • Maintain a current and verified database of community resources.

  • Follow up regularly with veterans and family members to review progress, paperwork and changing needs.

  • Coordinate with program leadership to determine when peer mentoring or additional support may be beneficial.

  • Develop productive relationships with government agencies, veteran service providers, funders, educational institutions and community organizations.

  • Represent Veterans Navigation Network professionally at meetings, outreach activities and community events.

  • Protect client privacy and maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Education and Experience

An associate degree or higher in business administration, management, social work, social services or a related field is preferred. Relevant substance-use counseling or comparable professional experience may also be considered.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Working with veterans, service members or military families.

  • Suicide prevention and crisis-response practices.

  • U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, programs and services.

  • Trauma-informed care and interviewing.

  • Care coordination and case management.

  • Developing safety, recovery or discharge plans.

  • Presenting program information, statistics and trends.

  • Tracking the sustainability of treatment, housing and employment outcomes.

  • Supporting individuals affected by PTSD, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma or substance-use disorders.

Candidates who do not already possess certain preferred training must be able to complete required training within six months of hire.

Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational abilities and a genuine commitment to serving others. This position requires sound judgment, professionalism, empathy and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.

Candidates should be comfortable establishing goals, identifying objectives, managing timelines and following projects through completion. A willingness to learn new programs and take on evolving responsibilities is essential.

Position Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% for local, statewide and national meetings or events.

  • Willingness to travel by vehicle or air and complete occasional overnight travel.

  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends.

  • Ability to complete at least six hours of continuing education annually following initial training.

This is a contract-funded position and continued employment is contingent upon the receipt and continued availability of funding. Position sustainability is included in the organization’s strategic plan.
