Job summary

Bluebonnet Trails Community Services is seeking a Veteran Program Counselor to deliver trauma-informed behavioral health services to Veterans, Service Members, and their families. The role supports assessments, therapy, and treatment planning in a primarily remote setting with onsite needs as required.

Advanced licensure (LPC, LCSW, LMFT) is required in Texas, with a valid Texas driver’s license, and experience with military populations is preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

In support of our mission to continuously improve the health and independence of the individuals we serve, the Veteran Program Counselor provides trauma-informed, evidence-based behavioral health services to military Veterans, Service Members, and their families under the supervision of the Director of Specialty Programs. This position delivers comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and individualized treatment planning to promote recovery, resiliency, and overall wellness.

The Veteran Program Counselor serves as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, providing counseling services to Veterans and their families through in-person and tele-video appointments. Services include intake assessments, risk evaluations, evidence-based psychotherapies, crisis response, and ongoing therapeutic interventions using approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and other evidence-based practices appropriate to the individual\'s needs.

The Veteran Program Counselor collaborates with internal programs, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), Veteran Treatment Courts, community providers, medical facilities, law enforcement, and other community organizations to coordinate care, facilitate referrals, and improve access to behavioral health and supportive services. The position also participates in community education, outreach, engagement activities, and Veteran-focused events to increase awareness of available services and strengthen community partnerships.

This position requires timely and accurate documentation in the electronic health record (EHR), development of Person-Centered Recovery Plans, compliance with BTCS, CCBHC, Texas Veterans Commission, and state requirements, and participation in multidisciplinary staffing, supervision, and ongoing professional development. The Veteran Program Counselor may also provide consultation to staff, contribute to program development, and support quality improvement initiatives.

Successful Veteran Program Counselors demonstrate compassion, cultural humility, patience, strong clinical judgment, and a commitment to serving Veterans and their families. They possess excellent communication, crisis intervention, advocacy, and clinical documentation skills while effectively managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This position requires a flexible work schedule, Monday through Friday, with the majority of services provided remotely. Onsite work, community outreach, court participation, and in-person services are required based on clinical needs, program requirements, and community partnerships.

This position serves all 8 counties remotely at a home office and clinic sites as indicated.

Hourly Salary Range: $
31.80 - $37.55

The Veteran Program Counselor must have advanced licensure (LPC, LCSW, LMFT) to provide clinical counseling Texas.

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, recovery-oriented environment, with a proven ability to build meaningful connections with individuals served.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is highly valued.

• 1 year of experience in providing trauma-informed care in a dedicated mental health setting.
