Purpose
Vehicle Services Technicians inspect, maintain, and repair theoperating systems of various automobiles, light trucks, vans, heavy trucks, andequipment.
There are current Vehicle Services Technician vacancies forboth first (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and second shift (4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.).
Essential Functions
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
- Perform simple to complex maintenance and repair of majorautomotive operating systems, including steering, suspension, heating, cooling,exhaust, emission control, transmission, fuel, brake, hydraulic, electrical,electronic, and computer-controlled.
- Repair various engine types, including gasoline, diesel,propane, and alternative fuel.
- Conduct routine service such as lubricating steering,suspension, and other components; changing oil and fluids; and performinginspections for safety and operational fitness.
- Take repair orders and work independently or in consultationwith shop employees, drivers, or supervisors to diagnose problems related toequipment malfunctions; complete appropriate repairs.
- Perform heating and cutting operations with a torch andminor welding.
- Perform minor vehicle body repair work and touch-uppainting.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Test drive vehicles and test operational fitness of otherequipment.
- Perform general computer input and use related manuals,diagnostic equipment, and work tools.
- Perform services during emergencies and snow and ice controloperations.

Conditions of Employment
Vehicle Services Technicians must be willing and able to dothe following:
- Provide standard industry tools needed to perform the job safelyand efficiently.
- Be subject to mandatory call-in for emergency duty duringnon-standard business hours.
- Properly lift and move objects weighing up to 50pounds.
NOTE:This position is subject to U.S. Department ofTransportation Regulations on Drug and Alcohol Testing, including the requiredrelease of drug and alcohol tests conducted by previous employers within twoyears preceding appointment and random drug and alcohol testing throughoutemployment with the City of Milwaukee.
The preplacement medical requirements for this title includethe following:
- Physical/lift test
- Audiogram
- Vision
- DOT – Drug Test
- Three years of experience overhauling and repairingautomotive equipment.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's license at time of appointment andthroughout employment.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B without theair brake restriction within six months of appointment and throughoutemployment. NOTE: DPW Fleet Services will provide education and training foremployees required to obtain a CDL for their position with the City. It is theemployee's responsibility to obtain their CDL. *See note below.
- Good driving record at the time of appointment andthroughout employment. Driving records will be checked before job offer.
*A CDL must be obtained within six months of appointment bydoing the following:
- Passing the General Knowledge and Air Brakes portions of theCommercial Driver’s License test given by the State of Wisconsin Department ofMotor Vehicles (DMV),AND
- Passing a road test administered by an approved third-partyadministrator.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may alsobe considered (i.e., an associate degree in automotive technology cansubstituted for two years of experience or a technical diploma in automotivetechnology can be substituted for one year of experience).

Desirable Qualifications
- CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certified CNG(Compressed Natural Gas) tank inspector, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)certifications in the Automotive series A1 through A8, Medium/Heavy Truckseries T2 through T8, and L1 and L2 Advanced Engine diagnostics and driveability. (NOTE: Receiving these certifications may qualify for incentive ratesand/or advancement to the Vehicle Service Technician 4 level.)

- Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and defects with orwithout the use of diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to use hand tools and mechanical tools associatedwith automotive repair and municipal equipment repair.
- Ability to completely overhaul automotive equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret service, repair, and partsmanuals in hard copy and digital formats.
- Ability to repair and replace automotive or municipalequipment parts and components.
- Ability to use applicable computer hardware and software.

The current salary range (Pay Range 7GN)is$69,768-$85,608annually,and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$71,861-$88,176.
- NOTE 1: Appointment above the minimum is possible based uponlevel of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.
- NOTE 2: Vehicle Service Technicians may receive an incentiverate for completing related ASE and CNG certifications.
