Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, trackhoes, dump trucks, sweepers, vacuum trucks, forklifts, and snow removal gear.
  • Perform asphalt repair and maintenance on campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks.
  • Run compressors, asphalt saws, spray rigs, salt spreaders and related gear.
  • Transport materials and equipment to support grounds, construction, utility, and maintenance projects.
  • Perform snow plowing and ice control during winter and emergencies.
  • Operate CDL-rated vehicles in compliance with regulations.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment daily for safety and maintenance needs.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and checks.
  • Assist with refuse collection, storm drain work, and campus infrastructure support.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced staff in safe operation.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow safety policies.

Vehicle Operator III
Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator on the Construction Crew performsskilled construction, maintenance, transportation, and campussupport services utilizing commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.Responsibilities include snow removal, asphalt repair, storm drainmaintenance, refuse collection, material transport, and operationof specialized construction equipment throughout the Universitycampus. The position requires demonstrated experience safelyoperating heavy equipment and CDL-rated vehicles.

Experience operating front-end loaders, trackhoes, street sweepers,dump trucks, snowplows, and related heavy equipment. Experiencewith asphalt repair and roadway maintenance. CDL Class A preferred.Tanker and Air Brake endorsements preferred. Excavation and trenchsafety training preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment includingfront-end loaders, trackhoes, dump trucks, street sweepers, vactruck, forklifts, flatbeds, and snow removal equipment.
  • Perform asphalt repair and maintenance on campus roads, parkinglots, sidewalks, and pedestrian pathways.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as compressors, asphaltsaws, asphalt spray rigs, salt spreaders, and related constructionequipment.
  • Support grounds, construction, utility, and maintenanceprojects by transporting materials, equipment, and suppliesthroughout campus.
  • Perform snow plowing, snow removal, and ice control operationsduring winter weather events and emergency responsesituations.
  • Operate CDL-rated vehicles in compliance with University,state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct daily inspections of vehicles and equipment to identifymaintenance, safety, and operational concerns.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance including lubrication,cleaning, and operational checks of assigned equipment.
  • Assist with refuse collection, storm drain maintenance, andother campus infrastructure support activities.
  • Train and assist less-experienced employees in safe equipmentoperation and work practices as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with allsafety policies and procedures.
Physical Requirements
  • 1. This position requires employees to be oncall during periods when snow is forecast, including both day andnight shifts.
  • 2. This position requires participation in a rotating weekendon-call schedule to assist with utility interruptions andemergencies.
  • 3. If needed, employees may be required to work holidays andsupport campus events, including football games, concerts, andother special events, which often occur outside normal businesshours.
  • 4. The construction team within our shop also assists the MovingServices team as needed within the department.
Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following joblevels:

Vehicle Operator, III: Requires 3+ years ofrelated experience.

Preferences
  • Heavy equipment operation and snow removal experiencepreferred.
  • Depending on the applicant's qualifications and experience, weare willing to provide in-house training.
  • Looking for someone who is willing to learn and adapt, as wehave a wide variety of duties across campus.
  • Class A CDL preferred; minimum requirement is a Class B CDLwith tanker and air brake endorsements.
  • Asphalt experience preferred, primarily involving patching andrepair work.
