Job description

Sweetland Farm is known within the Upper Valley community for our bountiful CSA shares, full-diet farm stand, and a commitment to sustainability. Whether visitors to our Norwich, VT farm are stopping by to see our pasture-raised livestock, snipping herbs and flowers in our pick-your-own gardens after picking up their vegetable and fruit share, enjoying one of our fun farm events, or learning about our 90 in 10 Carbon Emissions Pledge and Leopold Conservation Award, there is lots to see and experience at Sweetland. We are very proud to be the active stewards of this beautiful farm land.

Our farm crew is a group of hard-working, kind-hearted, fun, and experienced farmers who are committed to growing great food. Peak season sees us working long hours to get the fields planted and cultivated, the crops harvested and packed, and the hay and animals tended. Each member of our crew takes on individual responsibilities, but all work together towards a common goal of running an efficient, productive, and sustainable farm.

Sweetland’s Vegetable Production Manager is the driving force behind our primary farm enterprise; growing high-quality produce on 15 acres of prime, sustainably-farmed soils. If you are an experienced grower with great leadership skills and a desire to work on a dynamic, innovative, diversified farm then this is the position for you! The “Veggie Manager” is responsible for all aspects of planning, growing, and harvesting a season’s worth of vegetables for our 8-month CSA and year-round farm store. As one of the core management team, the Vegetable Production Manager collaborates with the Head Farmer, Equipment Operators, and Farm Store Manager to plan and prioritize tasks, trouble-shoot problems, delegate responsibilities, and discuss big-picture planning. Every day at Sweetland is fast-paced and action-packed, and the Production Manager leads the charge. Whether they are planning the crop rotation for the coming season, training and leading a harvest crew, assessing crops on a weekly field walk, or researching improved production methods, the Veggie Manager draws on their experience and skills in the field of production farming.

Position responsibilities:

  • Crop rotation planning, seed orders, and harvest planning using farm management software.
  • Weekly field walks to assess crop health, plan upcoming work, and identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Field crew training & leadership. Manage and work alongside 4-5 field crew, 1 wash/pack lead, 1 CSA coordinator, and 2-3 equipment operators.
  • Communication with other managers to plan work flow, update produce availability, and request tillage and mechanical cultivation.

Position requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years experience managing diversified vegetable production.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and crew management skills.
  • Ability to learn and use farm planning and record keeping software such as Tend, GoogleSheets, and LocalLine.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Stamina to work long hours outdoors in all weather and carry up to 50 pounds. Strong work ethic.
  • Desire to build, use, and improve farm systems that enhance work efficiency and production quality.

This is a full-time, year round, salaried position. While we are hiring for a single season, we hope to find someone who settles into the role, puts down roots, and farms with us for many years to come! We work alongside our farm team and strive to create a cooperatively minded, fair, and positive workplace. Farming is a lifestyle, as much as it is a job. In addition to doing work you can be proud of, we offer:

  • 1 month paid training and overlap with outgoing manager, March 2027
  • Full time April 1, 2027-March 31, 2028. Roughly 45-50 hours per week May through October, 30-40 hours per week November through April.
  • Competitive pay, based on experience
