Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Information Technology Division is seeking a SQL Server / Cloud DBA in Mechanicsville, VA. You will administer SQL Server and cloud databases, support applications, and ensure uptime in a dynamic Tolling environment.

Ideal candidates have 6+ years on SQL Server, Azure/Snowflake/Databricks experience, a Master’s degree, and proven ability to diagnose deadlocks, tune large databases, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases.
• Master's degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent.
• 1+ year of experience with Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks (certification acceptable in lieu of experience).
• Experience upgrading Tolling SQL Server environments (SQL 2012 to 2019).
• Experience diagnosing deadlocks and blocking in production workloads.
• Experience tuning Very Large Databases (2 TB) including index optimization.

Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Information Technology Division (ITD) Tolling group as a SQL Server / Cloud DBA. This role is perfect for those who are passionate about database administration and support in a dynamic environment. Responsibilities

• Administer and support SQL Server and cloud databases within the Tolling group.
• Participate in help desk and application support responsibilities as part of a rotation with the Tolling team.
• Monitor databases to ensure uptime and availability.
• Troubleshoot application/database issues related to connectivity, access, and security.
• Tune long-running SQL queries for optimal performance.
• Review and refine existing database tasks and processes to align with agency/group priorities.
• Utilize O/S scripting utilities for database maintenance, diagnosis, and support.
• Perform SQL Server installations, including failover clustering.
• Support SQL Server databases with administration, support, and tuning.
• Propose, execute, and/or direct necessary changes to existing database implementations.

Qualifications

• At least 6 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases.
• At least 1 year of experience with Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks (a certification is acceptable in lieu of experience).
• Master's degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent skills, knowledge, and work history.
• Demonstrated experience in effective communication using standard requirements and design artifacts.
• Minimum 3-4 years of hands-on experience upgrading E‑ZPass Virginia Tolling SQL Server environments from SQL 2012 to SQL 2019.
• Experience diagnosing and resolving deadlocks and blocking in Tolling production workloads.
• Experience tuning Very Large Databases (2 TB) including index optimization and minimizing resource contention.
