Job Description:
VDOT ITD Tolling is seeking an experienced SQL Server / Cloud DBA to administer, support, and optimize SQL Server and cloud databases supporting Tolling operations. The role includes database administration, performance tuning, troubleshooting, upgrades/migrations, and rotational help desk/application support.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and support SQL Server 2019+ environments, including high availability, clustering, and failover.
- Perform SQL Server installation, patching, upgrading, migration, and maintenance.
- Monitor database health, uptime, availability, security, and connectivity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve deadlocks, blocking, performance, and application/database issues.
- Tune long-running SQL queries and Very Large Databases (2TB+), including indexing and resource contention.
- Support upgrades of E-ZPass Virginia Tolling databases, including compatibility assessment, DMA, and Query Tuning Assistant.
- Develop, debug, and optimize T-SQL.
- Utilize Extended Events, Query Store, wait statistics, and OS scripting for diagnosis and maintenance.
- Work with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- Support Azure and other cloud database platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks.
- Collaborate with engineering and operations teams and document technical requirements/designs.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of Microsoft SQL Server DBA experience.
- 3+ years of SQL Server performance tuning.
- 2+ years upgrading E-ZPass/Tolling SQL Server environments.
- 3+ years diagnosing and resolving deadlocks and blocking in production workloads.
- 2+ years tuning 2TB+ Very Large Databases.
- 3+ years experience with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- 4+ years installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server.
- Strong T-SQL coding and debugging skills.
- Experience with Windows Server and SQL Server high availability/clustering.
- 1+ year of Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks experience; certification may substitute for experience.
- Strong communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education/experience.
Preferred
- SQL Server 2022/2025+ and Failover Clustering.
- Azure cloud database administration.
- Experience supporting large-scale tolling/E-ZPass production environments.
- Knowledge of data modeling principles.
