Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, service, and maintain electric and hydraulic davit systems and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems and perform component replacement as needed.
  • Conduct shipboard and field service work, including troubleshooting and corrective maintenance.
  • Perform inspections to applicable standards (SOLAS, Marine Authority) and maintain documentation.
  • Represent the company with safety, quality, and customer service in mind.

In this role, you will install, test, commission, maintain, and service electric and hydraulic davit systems and related equipment across Fairbanks Morse Defense customer bases, including naval, coast guard, commercial, and industrial customers. You will travel to shipyards, onboard active vessels, and customer facilities to perform service, inspections, and upgrades in accordance with company procedures, applicable regulations, and FMD quality and safety standards.

This position combines hands‑on technical field work, safety and compliance, and customer‑facing service, as well as plays a key role in ensuring mission‑critical davit systems are safe, reliable, and compliant.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities
Technical & Field Work
  • Install, repair, service, and maintain electric and hydraulic davit systems and related equipment.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting, as well as component replacement as required by product line and customer needs.
  • Conduct shipboard**, off site distant support,** and field service work, including troubleshooting and corrective maintenance.
  • Perform annual and five‑year inspections and safety checks in accordance with manufacturer procedures, classification requirements, and certification standards (e.g., SOLAS and relevant Maritime Authority regulations).
  • Maintain test equipment, tools, and product documentation in good working order.
  • Prepare accurate service reports, inspection documentation, and other required records using Fairbanks Morse Defense templates and procedures.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
  • Follow all Fairbanks Morse Defense HSE/EHS policies and site‑specific safety procedures.
  • Complete required safety and technical training and maintain necessary certifications.
  • Ensure work is carried out in compliance with the company's quality management system and applicable ISO standards.
  • Use QA systems and tools in daily operations and support continuous improvement of safety and quality performance.

  • Maintain timely communication with the Service Manager and regional offices on job status, issues, and resource needs.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
  • Provide feedback to Engineering and Product Management on recurring issues and potential design or process improvements.
  • Contribute to standardization and optimization of service procedures, documentation, and tools.
  • Collaborate effectively with Program Management, Production, Supply Chain, Quality, and other internal stakeholders to support efficient execution of jobs.
Other
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and technical requirements related to davit systems.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Service Manager or designated leader.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree in a technical field (mechanical, electrical, marine, or related discipline) preferred.
  • Relevant technical/vocational training in hydraulic and/or electric systems, crane or industrial/heavy maintenance is a plus.
Experience
  • Hands‑on experience with hydraulic and/or electric systems, crane or industrial/heavy equipment experience strongly preferred.
  • Field service, maintenance, or technician experience.
  • Electrical systems experience (low/high voltage) preferred.
  • Experience working from technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic and electrical test equipment and basic hand tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem‑solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaborate as part of a cross‑functional team.
  • Proficiency with basic computer tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, digital service reporting).
Travel Requirements
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately up to min 50% domestically and 10% internationally, including shipyards, vessels, and customer facilities.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain any required travel documents and clearances (e.g., passport, visas, site access).
Other Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of shipboard and industrial environments, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting at least 50lbs.
  • Prior military experience with hydraulic and/or electrical systems (e.g., U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, other maritime services) is a strong plus.
