Reports To: FMD Site Leader - Newport News Shipyard

Summary

Fairbanks Morse Defense is seeking a high-energy, self-starting Field Service Technician to support critical U.S. Navy operations at the Newport News Shipyard.

This is a full-time direct hire role (not a contract position). We are seeking an experienced Field Service Technician with a strong background in equipment maintenance and repair. This role requires a highly skilled professional with at least 2 years of hands‑on experience in field service, who can independently diagnose, repair, and maintain various types of equipment.

This is hands‑on, precision technical work in a highly regulated, mission‑critical naval environment, offering stability, long‑term career growth, and a true technical career path within Fairbanks Morse Defense.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Field Service: Travel to customer sites to perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment.
  • Diagnosis and Repair: Accurately diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in a variety of equipment, including but not limited to industrial machinery, commercial equipment, and specialized tools.
  • Parts Identification: Identify necessary parts and materials required for equipment repairs and maintenance, ensuring timely procurement and availability.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate effectively with customers to explain technical issues, provide recommendations, and ensure satisfaction with services provided.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on each job, ensuring all service reports are completed and submitted on time. Daily reports to the customer and the internal field service team a necessity.
  • Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all safety guidelines and industry regulations, ensuring all work is performed in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, tools, and best practices to improve service quality and efficiency.
Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in field service, maintenance, and repair of industrial or commercial equipment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with proven experience in diagnosing and repairing complex equipment issues.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in equipment maintenance, mechanical or electrical repair are preferred.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical customers.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy equipment and tools, work in various environments, and perform physical tasks as required.
Documentation & Communication
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Document all work performed using laptop-based reporting systems and company tools.
  • Communicate technical findings, status, and recommendations clearly with engineers and U.S. Navy personnel.
  • Maintain strict safety, quality, and procedural compliance in all work activities.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all Fairbanks Morse Defense and shipyard safety policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintain proper use of PPE and fall protection systems.
  • Adhere to all applicable regulations and standards for shipboard/shipyard work.
Work Environment / Physical Demands

Work in a physically demanding shipyard/shipboard environment requiring the ability to:

  • Walk long distances across shipyard and vessel spaces.
  • Climb ladders, gangways, and vertical ship access points.
  • Work in confined, elevated, and industrial spaces aboard ships.
  • Carry tools, parts, and test equipment throughout the vessel.
  • Work at heights using fall protection systems.
  • Stand and work for extended periods.
General
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and professional presence.
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the role as assigned.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Additional Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required (NOFORN position).
  • Must meet all security and access requirements for naval shipboard work.
