Job summary

Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is seeking a part-time Van Driver to transport students to and from school events. This role may also serve as a substitute driver as needed, reporting to the Transportation Manager. The position is unionized and lasts 10 months.

Responsibilities include safe driving, pre/post-trip inspections, drills, and assisting Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and families. Must maintain a valid license and ASL proficiency.

Qualifications

• Must have current and valid Driver’s License.
• 3 years driving experience (including personal and professional).
• Demonstrated American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency at a Level 1 (ASLPI) or above required; advanced proficiency preferred.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to traffic laws and safety regulations to ensure passenger safety.
• Maintain a safe environment on the van for students, staff, and other passengers.
• Assist students and families safely with boarding and exiting the van.
• Complete pre- and post-trip inspections; report mechanical issues promptly.
• Report incidents, accidents, delays, or unusual occurrences; complete documentation.
• Participate in all school bus safety and fire drills.
• Distribute notes and information to parents as directed by the Transportation Department.
• Keep the van clean, fueled, and ready for use at all times.
• Communicate with students, staff, and families who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Employment information: This is a part-time, FLSA non-exempt, 10-month union position.

Summary:

The Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from various school events, including ASP (After-School Programs), Athletics, FNL (Friday Night Live), and other designated activities using a PSD van. This position may also serve as a substitute driver as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Adhere strictly to all traffic laws and safety regulations to ensure passenger safety.
• Maintain a safe environment on the van for students, staff, and other passengers.
• Ensure students are seated securely and follow safety protocols throughout the ride.
• Provide clear instructions regarding safety precautions and expected behavior while on the van.
• Assist students and families safely with boarding and exiting the van.
• Complete pre- and post-trip inspections; report mechanical issues promptly.
• Report incidents, accidents, delays, or unusual occurrences promptly, completing all necessary documentation.
• Participate in all school bus safety and fire drills.
• Distribute notes and information to parents as directed by the Transportation Department.
• Successfully complete annual CPR & First Aid re-certification.
• Keep the assigned van clean, fueled, and ready for use at all times.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, staff, and families who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
• Model PSD’s Core Values—Students 1st, Language, Respect, Communication, and Community Engagement—in all interactions.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support students and transportation services.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Must have current and valid Driver’s License
• 3 years driving experience (including personal and professional).
• At least 21 years of age.
• No convictions of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) within 15 years.
• No more than 2 moving violations within the past 36 months.
• No more than 2 accidents (verified by corresponding violation or points associated with accident) within the past 36 months.
• Demonstrated American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency at a Level 1 (ASLPI) or above required; advanced proficiency preferred.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
• Ability to operate a vehicle safely, including steering, braking, and maneuvering in various conditions.
• Ability to assist students entering or exiting the van, including those with mobility challenges.
• Ability to lift or support up to 50 pounds, as needed.
• Ability to bend, reach, and move safely within the vehicle when assisting passengers.
• Sufficient vision and coordination to operate the vehicle and monitor passenger safety.

Working Conditions:

• Work primarily occurs on the road while driving a van to and from school and school events.
• Frequent interaction with students, staff, and families, including those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
• Exposure to typical traffic conditions, weather variations, and noise from students or school activities.
• May require early morning, evening, or weekend hours depending on school events.
• Must follow all safety, traffic, and PSD policies and procedures consistently.

Mental & Cognitive Demands:

• Ability to maintain focus and attention while driving and monitoring passengers.
• Strong situational awareness to respond quickly to traffic or safety concerns.
• Ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, including passenger safety, route timing, and communication with staff and families.
• Good judgment and decision‑making skills in routine and emergency situations.
• Patience, flexibility, and professionalism in interactions with students, staff, and families.
