Job summary

Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is seeking a part-time Van Driver to transport students to and from school events. This role may also serve as a substitute driver as needed, reporting to the Transportation Manager. The position is unionized and lasts 10 months.

Responsibilities include safe driving, pre/post-trip inspections, drills, and assisting Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and families. Must maintain a valid license and ASL proficiency.

Qualifications

  • Must have current and valid Driver’s License.
  • 3 years driving experience (including personal and professional).
  • Demonstrated American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency at a Level 1 (ASLPI) or above required; advanced proficiency preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to traffic laws and safety regulations to ensure passenger safety.
  • Maintain a safe environment on the van for students, staff, and other passengers.
  • Assist students and families safely with boarding and exiting the van.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections; report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Report incidents, accidents, delays, or unusual occurrences; complete documentation.
  • Participate in all school bus safety and fire drills.
  • Distribute notes and information to parents as directed by the Transportation Department.
  • Keep the van clean, fueled, and ready for use at all times.
  • Communicate with students, staff, and families who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
