Job summary

Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is seeking a Van Driver to transport students to and from school events, including ASP, Athletics, and FNL, while ensuring safety and adherence to PSD policies.

This 10-month, part-time union position requires a valid driver’s license, ASL proficiency, and a clean driving record. The driver may substitute as needed and will work under the Transportation Department to support students and families who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Qualifications

  • Must have current and valid Drivers License.
  • 3 years driving experience (including personal and professional).
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • No DUI/DWI within 15 years.
  • No more than 2 moving violations in 36 months.
  • No more than 2 accidents in 36 months.
  • ASL proficiency Level 1 or above; advanced preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere strictly to traffic laws and safety regulations to ensure passenger safety.
  • Maintain a safe environment on the van for students, staff, and other passengers.
  • Ensure students are seated securely and follow safety protocols throughout the ride.
  • Provide clear instructions regarding safety precautions and expected behavior while on the van.
  • Assist students and families safely with boarding and exiting the van.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections; report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Report incidents, accidents, delays, or unusual occurrences promptly, completing all necessary documentation.
  • Participate in all school bus safety and fire drills.
  • Distribute notes and information to parents as directed by the Transportation Department.
  • Successfully complete annual CPR & First Aid re-certification.
  • Keep the assigned van clean, fueled, and ready for use at all times.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, staff, and families who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Model PSDs Core Values—Students 1st, Language, Respect, Communication, and Community Engagement—in all interactions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support students and transportation services.
