VALLEJO CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

PAYROLL TECHNICIAN -Temporary Position 3-6 months FT

Reports To: Payroll Supervisor

Department: Fiscal Services

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Under the direction of the Payroll Supervisor, performs a wide variety of specialized accounting procedures for the timely preparation of the District payrolls.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  • Maintain and process the District payroll records.
  • Process and record specialized payroll transactions and related services; process paperwork on retired and terminated employees.
  • Communicate with District departments and personnel to obtain and provide information, resolve discrepancies, and correct errors.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to provide proper salary payment to all new and continuing employees.
  • Verify personnel pay calculations and employee leave documentation.
  • Update payroll data via computer systems.
  • Assist in preparation of payroll-related reports, including quarterly and annual reports.
  • Reconcile payroll errors and discrepancies.
  • Perform technical accounting procedures related to employee benefits and voluntary deductions.
  • Monitor compliance with payroll laws, regulations, procedures, and District policies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school supplemented by twelve (12) college units in a related field and two (2) years of progressively responsible accounting-related experience, preferably in a public-school setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Accounting, bookkeeping and financial record-keeping principles related to payroll processing and reporting.
  • Proficient with Escape Software (Escape Online/Frontline Education) -must have
  • Financial and statistical record-keeping techniques.
  • Advanced spreadsheet applications including Microsoft Excel.
  • Word processing applications and office technology.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability to:
  • Perform payroll and accounting work accurately.
  • Maintain accurate payroll and financial records.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Analyze situations accurately and implement effective solutions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment: Office environment.

Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting, keyboarding, repetitive hand motions, vision, hearing, and general office-related physical activities required to perform payroll functions.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary range is $36-$38/hr
