Job Description

This position supports the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program, representing International SOS and providing services outlined below. We seek an experienced Veterinary Technician Assistant to support biomedical research involving laboratory animals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform basic animal husbandry: handling animals, cage changes, sanitation, managing food and water.
  • Provide pre- and post-surgical animal care.
  • Communicate with veterinary staff, researchers, and research personnel regarding biomedical projects.
  • Understand species-specific housing and cleaning requirements.
  • Administer special feedings, medications, and injections.
  • Operate research equipment: ventilated housing, cage washers, autoclaves, watering systems, environmental monitors.
  • Monitor equipment and report data to VMU supervisor.
  • Record animal census data and generate reports complying with federal regulations.
  • Collect biological samples for pathogen testing and research.
  • Participate in disease and health surveillance programs, develop related data.
  • Observe animals for sickness or illness, document findings, and notify staff.
  • Coordinate daily health checks, medication administration, treatments, and oversee experiments.
  • Schedule and manage use of animal procedure rooms.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements/Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • At least one year of laboratory animal husbandry experience.
  • Eligible for ALAT certification.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Physical Requirements
  • Work mainly in an indoor environment.
  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
  • Bending, stooping, and lifting up to 15 lbs.
Additional Qualifications
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Pass VA Public Trust Clearance.
