Job summary

Freedom of the Press Foundation is hiring a User Experience Designer to join a fully distributed team. You will shape the UX of SecureDrop, an open source whistleblower submission system used by many news organizations, while collaborating with web teams to improve freedom.press and the US Press Freedom Tracker.

We seek a mid-level to senior designer with 3+ years of experience, strong collaboration skills, and the ability to work across UX, accessibility, and security challenges.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience as a designer on a product team, taking features from concept to delivery.
• Experience working in a fully distributed team.
• At least 4 hours time zone overlap with US Pacific or US Eastern Time for real-time collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Improve the UX of SecureDrop and related projects across interaction and visual design, prototyping and user research.
• Collaborate closely with the development team and web teams to enhance articles and sites (freedom.press, US Press Freedom Tracker).
• Balance usability with security and accessibility considerations in a privacy-focused, open-source context.
