Job summary

Middlesex Water Company seeks a Utility Worker II to assist in installing water services and maintaining fire hydrants, valves, mains, and distribution system components.

You will support sewage collection systems, work with GIS maps, complete work orders, and help with safety procedures. Overtime and on‑call duties may be required. CDL‑A within one year is preferred; must work outdoors in all weather and adhere to safety standards.

Job description

Position Overview

The Utility Worker II is responsible for assisting in all necessary tasks involved with the installation of water services and performing maintenance, repair, and inspection of Tidewater Utilities fire hydrants, valves, water mains, services, and distribution system components. The role also includes repair and maintenance of sewage collection systems. All work is performed with a reasonable standard of care and in a safe, professional manner. Reports to a Distribution Foreman or other job site oversight.

Work Performed
  • Installs saddles, valves, and piping for water services.
  • Helps make necessary repairs to services, mains, and fire hydrants.
  • Ensures current Miss Utility ticket is on file before digging with equipment.
  • Uncovers all marked or suspected utilities by shovel before proceeding.
  • Assists in using the enterprise GIS system to locate and verify valves and components.
  • Assists in using sewage collection maps to locate manholes and determine flow direction.
  • Accounts for materials used and transfers information onto appropriate work order.
  • Backfills material; tamp to ensure proper compaction, rake to remove clumps, and seed.
  • Uses mechanical tampers to compact disturbed areas in roadways and parking lots.
  • Assists in operational checks and inspections of fire hydrants, valves, and other components.
  • Responds to sewer backups and assists in clearing blockages using power equipment.
  • Performs other duties as directed to assist other departments.
  • May be required to work unscheduled overtime and perform on‑call duties.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Uses construction equipment under direction from more experienced staff.
  • Utilizes Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) to receive and complete Field Activities (FAs).
Qualifications
  • Capable of working well with others and with minimum direct supervision.

  • Follows established safety procedures and recognizes potential hazards.
  • Wears safety harness and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Has basic computer skills to complete timesheets, work orders, FAs, and other tasks.
  • Can learn how to operate construction equipment such as backhoe, trencher, and tamper.
  • Has average overall mechanical skills.
  • Can interact with customers in a professional manner and uphold the company’s image.
  • Possesses a valid CDL‑A motor vehicle license or the ability to obtain a CDL‑A within one year of hire.
Physical Demands

Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and driving. Routine use of shovels and hand tools. Regularly climbing in and out of trenches with and without ladders. Routine bending, crouching, kneeling, working in confining spaces and over one’s head. Occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing as much as 50 pounds unassisted and more with assistance. Routine walking on uneven ground and slopes.

Working Conditions

Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and temperatures. Exposure to continuous background noise and water treatment chemicals is more likely than not. Exposure to raw sewage is possible, but remote. Occasional exposure to loud noises and fumes is possible.

Work Authorization & Pre‑Employment Requirements

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. All candidates must successfully pass a drug screen, pre‑employment physical, background check, and possess a valid driver’s license in good standing (if required for the position). Additionally, candidates must be cleared by the Department of Defense to access the government facility.
