Job description

MULTIPLE VACANCIES OPEN IN GENERAL SERVICES, PARKS & RECREATION, AND PUBLIC WORKS

40 HOURS PER WEEK POSITION

Unskilled, entry-level heavy and light physical work in a wide variety of activities such as: cutting grass, weeds, trees, and brush; cleaning culverts, drains, and ditches; moving, loading, and unloading materials, supplies, and equipment; assisting in the repair and construction of roadways, walkways, utility installations, etc. Work is generally performed outdoors under varied weather conditions. Certain positions may require driving of a City vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference on such positions. Reports to the assigned Foreman/Superintendent or comparable supervisor.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

DUTIES VARY DEPENDING ON THE WORK PERFORMED IN A SPECIFIC DEPARTMENT AND REQUIRED FOR A SPECIFIC POSITION.

EXAMPLES MIGHT INCLUDE:

Performs maintenance/construction tasks individually or in a crew in such diverse areas as streets, drainage, parkways, recreation maintenance, building/grounds maintenance, etc.

Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as custodian supply list, leave request forms, call reports, etc.

Operates a variety of equipment and machinery and drives a variety of vehicles which vary by department.

Uses a variety of tools.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Foreman, coworkers, office personnel, and the general public.


ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.Requires acceptable applicants to be eighteen (18) years of age, or older, have an acceptable work and personal history, be free from any condition which would prevent the safe and efficient performance of their essential duties and be able to follow simple written and oral instructions.

NOTE: ALL POSITIONS REQUIRE A CURRENT, VALID LOUISIANA DRIVER’S LICENSE. SOME POSITION REQUIRE HIGH CLASS LICENSES (CLASSES A, B, C, OR D) DUE TO THE VEHICLE(S) DRIVEN. VACANCIES WILL BE FILLED SELECTIVELY BASED ON THE LICENSE EACH CANDIDATE POSSESSES AND THE DRIVING REQUIREMENTS OF THE PARTICULAR POSITION.

EXAMINATION: NON-COMPETITIVE - ALL CANDIDATES MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND ANY NECESSARY SELECTIVE CRITERIA WILL BE CERTIFIED TO THE VACANCY.Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to perform the tasks required for the specific position. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to fifty pounds.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read weekly room schedules. Requires the ability to prepare repair requests, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals; to multiply and divide; to determine percentages and decimals; and determine time and weight.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners and copier.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than giving or receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
