Job summary

The City of Canyon TX is seeking a Utility Worker I in the Public Works Water Division. Under direct supervision of the Water Foreman you will perform manual labor and technical tasks in water utility operations, with an On-Call schedule and overtime as emergencies arise.

Responsibilities include inspecting and maintaining water distribution facilities, operating heavy equipment, installing taps, meter work, water sampling, and coordinating with foremen and supervisors to ensure reliable water

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must obtain TCEQ Class D Water License within 6 months of start date.
• Must obtain TCEQ Class C Distribution Water License within 2 years.
• CDL-A is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Inspect vehicles and equipment daily and perform routine maintenance.
• Operate truck and trailer to carry heavy equipment to work sites.
• Operate backhoe, front-end loader, hydro excavation trailer, jackhammer, and other equipment for excavation and repairs.
• Maintain water distribution facilities and repair damaged mains/services.
• Test water samples for chlorination studies and ensure water quality.

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Water Foreman, the Utility Worker I performs manual labor and technical tasks associated with water utility and water distribution operations. This position will require an On-Call schedule with OT as emergencies arise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to work in the United States
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Texas driver's license or the ability to obtain one.
• Driving record with no major infractions.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

• Must possess or be able to obtain TCEQ Class D Water License certification within 6 months of employment start date.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a TCEQ Class C Distribution Water License within 2 years of employment start date.
• Texas CDL A is preferred but not required.

EXPERIENCE

• Some experience of industrial/commercial plumbing is preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

There are no supervisory roles for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inspects vehicles and equipment daily and performs routine and preventative maintenance as needed.
• Operates truck and trailer to carry heavy equipment to work sites
• Operates backhoe, front-end loader, hydro excavation trailer, jackhammer, and other equipment needed to excavate the area for repair work.
• Operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution facilities.
• Performs repairs on damaged utility mains and services.
• Performs Booster pump station operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Performs water main flushing.
• Install taps for water services.
• Performs fire hydrant maintenance, repair, or replacement.
• Cleans out, raises, and sets water meter cans to grade.
• Performs other manual tasks associated with meter maintenance.
• Performs and tests water samples for chlorination studies.
• Required to maintain lines of communication with the Utility Worker II, Foreman, and Supervisor in such a manner as to provide good working relationships at all times.
• Required to answer/or aid after hours even when not on call.
• The use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment following all established policies is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of basic plumbing principles
• Knowledge of the safe use of power tools
• Knowledge of the safe use of heavy equipment (front-end loader, backhoe, hydro-evacuator).

Skills:

• Communication skills – the ability to maintain communications with the foreman and other team members to ensure project status and project needs are met.
• Customer service skills – must be able to maintain a professional demeanor with citizens, when responding to citizen's service requests.

Abilities:

• To recognize water transmission issues and quickly respond appropriately to the issue.
• Analyze work assignments and perform the tasks to achieve the best outcome for the city and its citizens.

The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, sometimes climbing of heights up to 150 feet, operations of hand tools, lifting of heavy objects (minimum of 80 pounds) frequently, and possibly awkward holding positions.

WORK SCHEDULE

The Utility Worker I will be required, regularly, to work more than 40 hours per week, as conditions demand. There is a rotating "On-Call" requirement, requiring after-hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency work.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel for the position is considered minimal. There may be occasional travel required for training and certification maintenance. Also, some travel may be required to obtain supplies and equipment. For the most part, the majority of travel is local.
