Job summary

City of Greenville Public Works is seeking a Utility Worker I – Distribution to help install, maintain, and repair the water distribution system in outdoor conditions. The role offers hands-on training and requires working with water mains, meters, and valves under supervision.

  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment, vehicles, and assigned work areas.
  • Follows safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and City policies.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies as assigned and under supervision.

Job Summary:

The Utility Worker I – Distribution performs entry-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution system. Work involves assisting with locating, repairing, and replacing water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and meters. This position provides hands‑on training and experience for individuals pursuing a career in water utilities and requires frequent outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Experience in construction, plumbing, or utilities preferred but not required.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license required. CDL preferred but not required. Must be able to obtain any required TCEQ certifications within the designated timeframe, if applicable.

  • Assists with locating, repairing, and replacing water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and meters.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic construction, plumbing, or utility practices (preferred).
  • Basic mechanical concepts and safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Water distribution system components and functions (ability to learn required).
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • City policies and procedures.

Skills in:

  • Using hand tools, power tools, and basic utility equipment.
  • Following written and verbal instructions.
  • Communicating effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and involves exposure to noise, traffic, dirt, water, and heavy equipment. Subject to standing, walking, bending, digging, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and lifting or carrying objects up to 75 pounds. Work requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Employee may be required to respond to emergency callouts, work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary. Work involves interacting with a wide variety of individuals and dealing with potentially stressful situations such as water main breaks or service disruptions.
