Job summary

The City of Amarillo is seeking a wastewater plant laborer to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in plant maintenance. The role requires working evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed, and is designated weather essential personnel.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanics with maintenance, repair and construction work.
  • Assist servicing pumps and motors.
  • Clear and clean lines and tanks by nodding or flushing.
  • Perform building maintenance including painting, sweeping, mopping, and minor repairs.
  • Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, pruning, trimming, weed eating, watering and landscape projects.
  • Assist in loading and unloading hazardous chlorine and sulfur dioxide gases following safety procedures.
  • Assist equipment operator in repairs and moving equipment.
  • Drive vehicles up to 2.5 tons and operate light tractors and riding mowers.
  • Check oil, fuel, water and lubricate vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job description

SUMMARY

Under supervision, this position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather as well as overtime as necessary by the department. This position is considered weather essential personnel.



ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Assist mechanics with various maintenance, repair and construction work.

  • Assist in servicing pumps and motors.

  • Clears and cleans lines and tanks by nodding or flushing.

  • Performs building maintenance including painting, sweeping, mopping, general cleaning and minor repairs.

  • Performs grounds maintenance including mowing, pruning, trimming, weed eating, and weed spraying, seeding, watering, and other landscape related projects.

  • Assists in loading and unloading potentially hazardous chlorine and sulfur dioxide gasses according to standard safety procedures.

  • Assist equipment operator in repairs and moving equipment.

  • Drives vehicles and trucks up to 2.5tons, uses other light tractors and riding mowers.




  • Checks oil, fuel, water and lubricates vehicles and equipment.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of the 9\" grade is required. Experience as a laborer preferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

  • Ability to work in undesirable conditions and inclement weather.

  • Ability to use and/or operate, and/or learn to use and operate small hand tools, drill press, mowers, trimmers, weedeaters, front-end loader and personal protective equipment.
