Job summary

The City of Amarillo is seeking a Utility Technician to support the sewer system through repair and construction tasks, debris removal, and occasional operation of service trucks. You will work on sewer lines, manholes, and taps, as part of rotating shifts, and respond to emergencies as needed.

Applicants should have at least an eighth-grade education, a Texas driver's license with capability to obtain a Class A CDL, and experience in water works is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of Eighth Grade.
  • One year of water works experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Texas Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the repair and construction of sewer lines, manholes, taps, and helps rod sewer mains.
  • Cleans and removes debris from sewer mains and manholes.
  • Occasionally operates service trucks.
  • Assists various crews such as hand rodding crews, vactor unit, tap crew, TV unit, and lift stations.
  • Assists with keeping vehicles and tools clean and in proper working condition.
  • Assists with shop and area cleaning.
  • Assists with barricading streets, alleys, etc. to protect the public and coworkers.
  • Works in and around traffic; wears safety equipment that is provided.
  • Works overtime when required and remains available by telephone for emergency callouts.
  • Responds to emergencies and call-backs one week out of the month or on emergency repairs.
  • Works a rotating shift as needed.

This position will be required to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as necessary by the department, and during inclement weather.
