Job summary

The City of Amarillo is seeking a dedicated Utility Worker for the Transfer Station. Under supervision, you will help spot and unload trucks, perform general cleanup, and assist with unskilled labor tasks at the site.

This role requires physical stamina and the ability to operate equipment like a backhoe or wheel loader, plus compliance with safety rules. Previous equipment experience is preferred, and a Texas driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Texas driver's license required.
  • Experience operating backhoe or wheel loader preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in extreme temperatures.

Responsibilities

  • Direct drivers in backing and unloading trucks at the transfer station.
  • Screening incoming waste and removing tires and metal for recycling.
  • Operate backhoe and/or wheel loader for cleaning up trash spills and recycling materials.
  • Help in cleaning Transfer Station – interior and exterior.
  • Performs minor repairs, painting, litter control and miscellaneous duties as required.

Wear safety vests, hard hat, safety glasses, safety work boots, gloves, misc.Adverse working environment:-Operations of the solid waste department occur year-round, in all types of weather, at a municipal waste processing environment. Must be capable of working in areas of extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and odors at times.Physical Effort-Requires a variety of sitting and/or standing while working, based upon assignment, for long periods of time. Requires lifting materials of up to 75 pounds and could involve heavier lifting of over 100 pounds with assistance, ability to pull with a force of at least 94 pounds, and throwing materials overhead into the back of a truck.
