Job summary

The State of Missouri is seeking a diligent auditor to join the Auditing Department in Jefferson City. You will audit investor-owned utilities, analyze financial data for anomalies, and prepare detailed workpapers and reports to support Commission recommendations.

Responsibilities include presenting testimony in formal rate cases and maintaining strong communication with stakeholders. A bachelor’s in accounting and 0–2 years of experience are preferred, with travel up to 30%.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or related field with at least 15 hours in accounting.
  • 0-2 years of professional accounting experience.
  • Familiarity with GAAP is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; proficient computer skills.

The Missouri Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned electric, natural gas, steam, water and sewer utilities in Missouri, in addition to manufactured housing. We ensure that Missourians receive safe and reliable utility services at just, reasonable and affordable rates. The Auditing Department is responsible for a forensic analysis of utilities books and records and identifies unusual financial activity, trends, anomalies, and ensures compliance with current Missouri statutes and Commission rules. Recommendations are provided to the Commission through expert testimony in both written and oral formats.

  • Perform audits and examinations of investor-owned utility companies operating within the State of Missouri.
  • Analyze financial data to identify anomalies, trends, and unusual activity.
  • Prepare detailed audit workpapers, schedules and reports supporting recommendations to the Commission.
  • Work includes presenting oral and written testimony in formal rate cases before the Commission.
  • Up to 30% travel may be required.
  • Work experience in this position qualifies for CPA certification.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, economics, or a closely related field with a minimum of 15 hours in accounting (December graduates are welcome to apply) and;
  • 0-2 years of professional accounting experience
  • Must be familiar with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, and writing skills are essential
  • Computer experience required, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access software applications preferred
