Job description

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Utility Operator. In this position you will, under limited supervision control, operate, maintain and monitor various utility production and distribution systems that provide utilities for buildings and facilities at UT-Battelle as well as other tasks as assigned my management. Utility systems include potable and process water distribution, sanitary sewage collection and treatment, compressed air production and distribution, steam production and distribution, storm water system, natural gas distribution, and chilled water production and distribution.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and inspect equipment, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
  • Activate or adjust controls, valves, pumps, compressors, flows, and temperatures to regulate and maintain required levels.
  • Monitor water, chemical, and fuel levels, and make adjustments to maintain required levels.
  • Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects to ensure proper operating parameters.
  • Test water quality or arrange for testing and take necessary corrective action, such as adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits.
  • Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems.
  • Switch from automatic to manual controls and isolate equipment mechanically and electrically to allow for safe inspection and repair work.
  • Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work.
  • Other tasks as assigned by management

Basic Requirements:
  • We require a high school or equivalent education level and
  • A minimum of four years' experience in related operator position, i.e. power plant operation; water distribution; sewage treatment; collection systems; or chilled water operations.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee driver's license or have the ability to obtain one.
  • The ability to perform basic math functions and basic computer functions is required.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts.


Preferred Requirements:
  • A Tennessee State Operator Certification(s) in water distribution systems, sewage treatment systems and sewage collection systems will be considered a plus.
  • Experience in operation of natural gas/fuel oil fired steam boilers, associated water treatment systems, and steam distribution systems will be considered a plus.


Special Requirements:
  • Physical Requirements: Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
