Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, Inc. is a leading metals supplier seeking a Utility Mechanic to repair and maintain plant equipment, including processing and material handling gear, overhead cranes, and building systems.

This role focuses on safety, preventive maintenance, and reliable operation within a manufacturing environment. You will participate in operator training, respond to breakdowns with urgency, coordinate outside maintenance, and contribute to a compliant, efficient maintenance program as

Qualifications

  • Pass skills-based assessment covering reading, math, inspection, measurement, detail and problem-solving.
  • 3–5 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing facility, preferably steel processing.
  • Knowledge of coil processing equipment (cut-to-length & slitters).
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements regarding equipment.
  • Proficient with PLCs, electrical, mechanical, air, hydraulics and blue prints.
  • Preventive maintenance programs.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage changing priorities and multiple tasks.
  • Enrollment in a registered apprenticeship program during onboarding.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and demonstrate a safe work environment.
  • Comply with the maintenance schedule and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Train and supervise operators on daily maintenance tasks for equipment.
  • Respond to unscheduled breakdowns with urgency.
  • Help eliminate machine downtime and coordinate outside maintenance services when required.
  • Order parts to keep equipment operating safely and efficiently.
  • Follow company ISO policies and safety/environmental guidelines.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.

As a Utility Mechanic at Ryerson, you will be responsible for repair and maintain plant equipment in an efficient manner on a daily basis including processing equipment, material handling equipment, overhead cranes & building repairs.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Promote & demonstrate a safe work environment
  • Comply to maintenance schedule & completion of preventive maintenance programs
  • Training & supervision of operators on daily maintenance tasks for equipment
  • Ability to react to unscheduled breakdowns with urgency
  • Help to eliminate machine downtime
  • Coordinate outside maintenance services as required
  • Order parts as required to keep equipment operating in a safe/efficient basis
  • Follows all Company ISO policies and procedures
  • Abides by all Company safety rules and environmental guidelines
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Keep work areas clean and organized

Requirements
