Job summary

Ryerson is seeking a Utility Mechanic to repair and maintain plant equipment daily, including processing, material handling, overhead cranes, and building systems. The role supports a legacy of excellence with a strong safety culture.

The position requires hands-on maintenance experience, especially in steel processing, with PLC and mechanical/electrical expertise. Successful candidates will enroll in an apprenticeship program during onboarding, under the Operations department.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing facility, preferably steel processing.
  • Knowledge of coil processing equipment (cut-to-length & slitters).
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements regarding equipment.
  • Proficient with PLCs, electrical, mechanical, air, hydraulics & blue prints.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and demonstrate a safe work environment.
  • Comply with maintenance schedule and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Training and supervision of operators on daily maintenance tasks for equipment.
  • Ability to react to unscheduled breakdowns with urgency.
  • Coordinate outside maintenance services as required.
  • Order parts to keep equipment operating safely and efficiently.
  • Follow all Company ISO policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all Company safety rules and environmental guidelines.
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized.
  • All other duties as assigned which may change at any time.

As a Utility Mechanic at Ryerson, you will be responsible for repair and maintain plant equipment in an efficient manner on a daily basis including processing equipment, material handling equipment, overhead cranes & building repairs.

Roles and Responsibilities

Requirements
  • Successfully pass a skills-based assessment - evaluates your reading, math, inspections & measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
