Under direct supervision, the Utility Maintenance Worker performs a variety of labor-intensive tasks in the construction, inspection, maintenance, and improvement of municipal potable water and sewage collection systems, ensuring compliance with local, state, and Federal regulations.
Essential Job Functions
- Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the municipal potable water systems.
- Performs heavy manual labor including digging, lifting, and breaking pavement under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, biological, electrical, and mechanical hazards.
- Ensures maintenance materials and supplies are stored safely and orderly.
- Installs, adjusts, and repairs utility access holes, manhole frames and covers, sewer clean-out boxes, valve boxes, curb stops, water meter boxes, and meter setters; establishes layout and sets up safety traffic controls around work areas.
- Performs pavement cuts, fits, and lays water and sewer lines.
- Removes utility access covers, enters access holes, unclogs sewer lines, and installs sewer clean-outs and connections.
- Sets up and operates confined space entry equipment, monitors atmospheres, and files reports.
- Operates heavy machinery, hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles.
- Assists with video inspection and rehabilitation of sewer lines and system components.
- Assists other Public Works departments as needed.
- Connects main water lines, installs, repairs, and reads water meters, and assists with water system operations.
- Maintains fire hydrants and performs other assigned tasks.
Education and Training
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Valid Class B or higher CDL required.
- Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Class 1 Wastewater Collection Certification and Water Distribution Certification from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment within a year of employment or next testing cycle.
Knowledge and Skills
- Computer literate with Microsoft Office.
- Must pass drug screening, motor vehicle review, and driving evaluation.
- Knowledge of safety rules, construction practices, and equipment.
- Ability to understand instructions, perform mathematical calculations, and communicate effectively.
- Flexible with shifts, able to work evenings, nights, weekends, and overtime.
- Ability to establish effective relationships, troubleshoot, and work independently.
