Job summary

Idahoan Foods, LLC is seeking a Utilities Technician to maintain boilers, heating systems, and associated utilities across the plant. The role requires hands-on maintenance, preventive care, and responsive troubleshooting to keep production running efficiently.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, 5 years in maintenance or two years of trade school, and experience with CMMS and MS Office. On-call availability (24/7) is expected to address downtime and emergencies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of trade school and/or five years’ maintenance experience.
  • Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office and CMMS.
  • Excellent communication, reading and interpretation of manuals and drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, install and repair boilers, heating systems, pumps and piping in an industrial plant.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on boiler components and document activities in records.
  • Troubleshoot steam systems, burners, gas equipment and control panels; monitor safety devices.
  • Train less experienced personnel and coordinate with outside contractors as needed.
  • Respond to on-call needs 24/7 to support plant uptime and emergencies.

Job description

Job purpose
The primary responsibilities of the Utilities Technician is to work as a mechanic with duties pertaining to the operation, installation, training, troubleshooting, and repairing of all plant boiler, utilities systems and equipment. This position is considered a Millwright and the qualified candidate should be capable of doing most jobs in the maintenance field with great skill.

Main Responsibilities
  • Maintains and promotes company standards for safety, quality, food safety, sanitation and GMPs
  • Understand basic applications of electrical and controls safety requirements within the maintenance department
  • Responsible for all tasks associated with installing, operating, repairing, inspecting, testing and maintaining stationary equipment including boilers, other heating system, generators, refrigeration and turbines used in industrial manufacturing process as well as pumps, piping systems, valves, gauges, pressure relief devices, steam traps, boiler safeties, and control panel
  • Performs preventative and predictive maintenance on boilers as well as their components to avoid problems before they occur including maintenance records and other routine paperwork, as required
  • Conducts monitoring and failure analysis of meters, gauges, and controls to determine the need for repair or replacement of parts
  • Troubleshoot steam systems (traps, valves, pumps, isolation), burners and natural gas systems, and equipment operation and sequencing
  • Demonstrate ability to manage scheduled work list while supporting plant needs and utilizing time effectively. When assigned, will work with outside contractors and auditors to ensure and inspect work quality meets company and insurance expectations
  • Understand where to find equipment documentation if needed (SOP’s, dwg’s, etc.) and how to contact external tech support as needed for after-hours scheduling and downtime scenarios
  • Act as a training mentor in areas of expertise and will train less experienced maintenance personnel
  • Willing to answer and respond to on call plant needs (24/7) to coordinate resources as needed and address emergency down time scenarios
Qualifications/Required Skills
  • Education and/or Experience
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Have two years of trade school and/or five years’ experience in maintenance.
    • Proficient with computers, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS.
  • Technical Skills
    • Able to install, maintain, and repair a variety of steam and hot water equipment systems involving boilers with complicated components, critical requirements, and ridged tolerances.
    • Monitor and adjust thermostats, switches, regulators, and other safety devices and alarm systems in compliance with established safety standards.
    • Must be able to use electronic controls, devices, and automatic boiler management systems to identify equipment malfunctions.
    • Must be able to complete projects based on individual knowledge and experience with limited Management oversight.
  • Language Skills
    • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, telephone skills, and thorough knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings.
  • Math Skills: Possess quantitative skills and knowledge of math functions such as percentages, decimals, and the ability to chart numerical data appropriately.

    • Demonstrates a high degree of self-confidence and maturity to make decisions required in day-to-day activities and solve problems with minimal direction.
    • Able to problem solve using skills and abilities to identify and resolve issues with equipment.
    • Displays strong organizational skills and great attention to detail and accuracy, problem analysis, and problem-solving skills.

    • Must be able to communicate effectively with others.

  • Certifications: Complete and maintain Idahoan Foods forklift.
Other Details
  • Work Environment: This position requires the ability to perform various physical activities such as heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing on concrete floors for extended periods of time, moving parts, and loud noise levels. Will be required to work in the boiler room, which may be cramped and is very often hot and extremely noisy. Must be able to work with sanitizers and cleaning chemicals. Must be able to work various shifts as assigned. Cleans job site and tools. Stores tools and equipment in designated places in an orderly manner. Works on ladders, scaffolds, forklift cages, and in pits using proper safety precautions. Wears personal protective equipment as needed for assigned tasks.
