Position Overview

The Underground Utility General Superintendent serves as a senior field operations leader responsible for overseeing multiple utility construction projects, Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel. This position plays a critical role in ensuring operational excellence, workforce development, safety performance, project execution, and client satisfaction across the organization.

The General Superintendent provides leadership and strategic oversight for underground utility construction operations involving fiber optic infrastructure, gas distribution systems, power utilities, excavation, trenching, and utility restoration projects. This individual is responsible for driving productivity, maintaining quality standards, allocating resources effectively, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and profitably.

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience managing large-scale utility construction operations, multiple project teams, and field leadership personnel. This role requires a proven ability to lead through others, develop high-performing teams, and successfully manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for multiple utility construction projects and field operations.
• Directly manage and mentor Superintendents, General Foremen, Foremen, and field leadership personnel.
• Drive operational performance, production goals, project schedules, quality standards, and safety initiatives.
• Coordinate manpower planning, workforce allocation, equipment utilization, and resource management across multiple projects.
• Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Operations personnel, Estimators, and Executive Leadership to ensure successful project execution.
• Monitor project performance, budgets, schedules, labor productivity, and operational metrics.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety programs, customer requirements, and industry standards.
• Conduct regular field visits, project reviews, and operational assessments to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Support business growth initiatives by assisting with operational planning, workforce development, and project execution strategies.
• Maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, utility owners, municipalities, and other key stakeholders.
• Identify and resolve operational challenges while maintaining production, quality, and customer satisfaction objectives.
• Foster a culture of accountability, leadership development, continuous improvement, and operational excellence throughout the organization.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of construction experience with at least 7 years of experience in underground utility construction.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a Superintendent, General Superintendent, Construction Manager, Operations Manager, or equivalent leadership role.
• Extensive knowledge of underground utility construction processes, excavation, trenching, utility installation, restoration, and infrastructure development.
• Proven experience overseeing multiple projects, multiple field leadership teams, and large-scale construction operations simultaneously.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision‑making abilities.
• Experience managing budgets, schedules, labor productivity, operational performance, and resource allocation.
• Ability to develop and mentor Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel.
• Strong understanding of construction software, project management systems, scheduling tools, and operational reporting.
