Job summary

City of Winston-Salem is seeking an Intermediate skilled trades helper to support water treatment operations under supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Operator. You will assist with routine maintenance, perform plant tours, record readings, and help with lab tests and chemical dosing under guidance.

The role requires ability to work in a busy plant environment, pass a math assessment, and obtain a NC Surface Certification as per city policy. Valid driver's license may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and minimal experience.
• Able to perform arithmetic computations.
• Experience or willingness to learn water treatment operations and basic testing.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior plant operator with routine technical and skilled work in operation and maintenance of water treatment plant and equipment.
• Make regular tours of plant to check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters and other equipment.
• Record readings from meters and instruments; perform laboratory tests.
• Report defects to maintenance personnel.
• Substitute for senior operator in his/her absence.
• Monitor water plant operations and distribution via SCADA.
• Adjust chemical dosages under the direction of the senior operator.

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting mechanics in maintaining water treatment operations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Operator.

• Assists senior plant operator with routine technical and responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plant and equipment associated within.
• Makes regular tours of plant to check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters and other equipment for proper functioning.
• Records readings from meters and instruments; performs specific laboratory tests.
• Reports defects to maintenance personnel.
• Substitutes for senior operator in his/her absence.
• Monitor water plant operations and distribution via SCADA

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; general knowledge water plant drawings and maps; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to compute flows, volumes, weights from data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

• Overtime is required and will supplement base salary
• Ability to pass a validated job assessment skills test which will include math (minimum passing score 70%)
• Valid driver's license
