Job summary

City of Winston-Salem, NC is seeking an intermediate skilled trades worker to assist in maintaining water treatment operations. You will support the senior plant operator, monitor SCADA, take readings, run basic tests, and help adjust chemical dosages as needed.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license, and the ability to perform arithmetic and basic laboratory tasks. Some overtime and on-site shifts are expected.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist senior plant operator with routine technical and skilled work.

• Record meter readings and perform lab tests as directed.
• Report defects to maintenance personnel and cover for senior operator when needed.
• Monitor operations and adjust chemical dosages under supervision.

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting mechanics in maintaining water treatment operations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Operator.

Qualification Requirements

• Assists senior plant operator with routine technical and responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plant and equipment associated within.
• Makes regular tours of plant to check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters and other equipment for proper functioning.
• Records readings from meters and instruments; performs specific laboratory tests.
• Reports defects to maintenance personnel.
• Substitutes for senior operator in his/her absence.
• Monitor water plant operations and distribution via SCADA
• Adjust chemical dosages under the direction of the senior operator

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; general knowledge water plant drawings and maps; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to compute flows, volumes, weights from data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, working with explosives, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, Exposure to Carcinogens and Exposure to E-coli and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Upon Hire

• Overtime is required and will supplement base salary
• Ability to pass a validated job assessment skills test which will include math (minimum passing score 70%)
• Valid driver's license
