Job summary

The City of Winchester is seeking a field technician to support water and sewer operations. Primary duties include hydrant maintenance, meter reading, line repairs, and locating utilities with maps and electronic tools.

Candidates should have at least a high school diploma or GED and be capable of obtaining a Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement by end of probation. English communication and safety in confined spaces are required.

Qualifications

• Education/experience equivalent to a High School diploma or GED is required.
• Some related experience in construction/plumbing is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Repair and service fire hydrants, including testing.
• Locate underground utilities using maps, rods, and electronic equipment.
• Assist in maintenance on water and sewer lines and pumps.
• Read meters and enter data into handheld devices.
• Check meters for leaks and perform repairs as needed.
• Install and remove meters and assist with repairs of lines.
• Perform 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends or holidays for snow/ice removal.
• Support other Public Services areas as needed.

Responsibilities

• Repairs and services (includes testing) fire hydrants
• Locates underground utilities using maps, rods, and electronic equipment
• Assists in preventative maintenance on water and sewer lines
• Reads water meters, entering data into portable handheld meter reading devices
• Checks meters for leaks, repairs as needed
• Installs and removes meters
• Assists in repairs of water and sewer lines
• Assists with preventative maintenance on pumps, motors, and equipment
• Uses hand tools related to water and sewer repairs; Makes water and sewer taps
• Snow/Ice removal (which includes 12 hour shifts possibly nights, weekends & holidays)
• Assists in other areas of Public Services as needed
• Contributes to a positive work environment

Requirements

Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required and some related experience in the construction/plumbing industry is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid and appropriate driver's licenses and the ability to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement by end of probation period.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend. Ability to speak and communicate effectively using correct English.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus which may be necessary for entry into confined space.
