Responsibilities

  • Provide service at the Bracken Library Information Desk; check out and accept returns; assist with print/electronic resources and policies.
  • Maintain hold shelf, issue library cards, create brief records, and prepare items for binding/receiving.
  • Train and monitor student assistants in area work assignments and duties.
  • Assist with overdue processes, notifications, and replacement costs.
  • Conduct searches for missing materials; update status in system and assist other units.
  • Close and secure Bracken Library on Friday and Saturday evenings; service copiers, microform readers/printers, and computers; monitor security.
  • Assist with Interlibrary Loan tasks and document delivery requests.
  • Perform other related duties and maintain regular attendance.

**Position Title:**User Services Assistant**Compensation:**$13.80 - 14.95**Department:**University Libraries\\_HH**Start Date:**11/22/2026**About this opportunity:**Ball State University Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative team member to join our dedicated Access Services unit as a User Services Assistant. This position assists Ball State students, faculty and staff, and community library users. The User Services Assistant answers research-related questions, checks out materials, and is responsible for assisting in the closing of Bracken Library on Friday and Saturday evenings. Successful candidates will have customer service experience and enjoy contributing to student academic success. The User Services Assistant will work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to provide excellent customer services and to promote the services and collections of the University Libraries. If you enjoy working with people, providing assistance to diverse communities of learners, and identifying solutions to complex problems, we invite you to apply today!Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the United States without employer sponsorship.**What you'll do and what you'll bring:****Position Function:** Provide service to users at the Bracken Library Information Desk; perform circulation duties and clerical tasks; close and secure Bracken Library on Friday and Saturday evenings; train and monitor student assistants in the performance of area work assignments and job duties; support a collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic direction of the University Libraries.**Duties & Responsibilities:****1.** Supervise circulation and research assistance services in Bracken Library during scheduled evening and weekend hours, including extended hours during finals week each semester.**2.** Provide service to users at the Bracken Library Information Desk; check out and accept returned materials; provide assistance in the use of print and electronic resources; provide library and/or university related information; interpret library policies and procedures including the fine and cost policy.**3.** Perform circulation duties; maintain hold shelf; issue library cards; create brief records for items not in the system; compile statistics; prepare books for binding and receiving; distribute items for rush orders; circulate and track usage of scholar carrel keys.**4.** Train and monitor student assistants in the performance of area work assignments and job duties.**5.** Assist in the overdue process, preparing items for automatic notifications of fine and cost assessment and determining replacement costs of lost materials.**6.** Conduct physical searches for missing and lost General Collection materials; maintain search files and update the status in the system; provide information on materials to other library units.**7.** Close and secure Bracken Library on Friday and Saturday evenings; service photocopiers, microform readers/printers, and computers as appropriate; monitor security conditions of Bracken Library.**8.** Assist with retrieving, photocopying, and scanning materials for Interlibrary Loan, processing document delivery requests, and processing electronic and print reserve requests.**9.** Perform other related duties as assigned.**10.** Maintain regular and predictable attendance.**Minimum Qualifications:*** Up to eighteen months of education beyond high school or equivalent.* Over three months through one year of related experience; public service experience; effective oral and written communication skills.* Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office applications.* Physical ability to lift collection and shelving materials up to 25 pounds, lift up to 10 pounds repeatedly, push a book cart up to 150 pounds, walk for 1 hour or more to perform walk-through/security checks of the entire building.**Preferred Qualifications:*** Additional computer skills.**How to apply:****For inquiries, please contact:** University Libraries, Dean's Office at 765-285-5277.**Please follow upload instructions to attach all of the required supporting documents listed below:** **NOTE: Do not use the Autofill feature for resume:** * Resume* Cover Letter* Undergraduate Transcripts (optional) **Applications must be received by October 16, 2026, at 12:01 AM.**
