Job summary

Cal Poly Pomona in California is inviting applications for a design-led urban design faculty position. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate urban design studios and a graduate urban design course, and may teach a community planning studio.

We seek candidates who integrate planning, policy, and design, with emphasis on climate-responsive and sustainable design, health and well-being, smart cities, and participatory approaches.

Qualifications

Job description

Position Description:

We seek a candidate with astrong design-led practice and/or research agenda in urban design,with demonstrated ability to shape the physical form and experienceof cities across scales. We welcome candidates who are engaged inpractice and/or research that advances urban design theory andpractice through work on the built environment, design guidelines,and spatial strategies that engage with contemporary planningchallenges. We are particularly interested in those whose workconnects urban design principles to critical planning issues,including but not limited to climate-responsive and sustainabledesign, urbanism for health and well-being, urban conservation,post-pandemic spatial adaptation, green infrastructure and urbanforestry, digital urbanism/smart cities, and participatory orcommunity-engaged design. A clear design methodology and portfolioof built, speculative, or research-driven work is highlyvalued.

The successful candidate will be expected to teachundergraduate-level urban design studios and a graduate-level urbandesign course. We especially welcome candidates who can also teacha community planning studio. We value candidates who havedemonstrated experience in promoting student learning in a studioenvironment and in research projects aimed at creating sustainableurban spaces and the built environment, and who can mentor studentsin visualization, representation, and design thinking thatintegrates research into applied design projects.

Minimum Requirements Include:

• A master's degree in urban design, architecture, landscapearchitecture or closely-related design discipline, withdemonstrated ability to apply design within planning or urbancontexts.
• Demonstrated expertise in urban design evidenced through a aportfolio of design work, built projects, or research-driven designpractice, with engagement in one or more of the research areasmentioned above.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, particularly instudio-based or project-based learning, and contributions tocurricular development.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in urban planning and/or related fields with a strongfocus on urban design (ABD will be considered, but the degree mustbe conferred by the start date of the position).
• Experience in teaching urban design studios, and potential forteaching a range of courses in the curriculum.
• Evidence of scholarly, creative, or professional work in urbandesign, including publications, built work, competitions, or fundedresearch
• Insights into mentoring & advising students, especiallyfirst-generation and students from historically underrepresentedgroups.
