Job summary

Elgin Community College in Elgin, IL is seeking a part-time Upward Bound Coordinator to implement academic support for eligible students, monitor progress, and provide guidance on coursework and financial aid. Under the SSECCA union and reporting to the program manager, you will coordinate tutoring, advise students, and assist with grant reporting, while maintaining participant data and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate educational support services for Upward Bound participants and ensure compliance with regulations of funding agencies and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Provide advice and counsel for Upward Bound participants regarding program academic requirements, standings, financial aid, etc.
  • Assist with in-service activities and assessments for high-need students, e.g., arrange tutoring assistance and computer lab time/training.
  • Coordinate personal growth opportunities for students and develop participants’ IEPs.
  • Assist management with writing and submission of grant proposals.
  • Collect and maintain accurate participant data; run routine reports.

Work Schedule:

TBD, Minimum: Monday - Thursdays 2:00pm-5:00pm. One Saturday per month 9:00am-2:00pm.

Rate of Pay:

This is a Part-Time Support Staff position at grade 14, with an hourly pay rate of $26.67 to $35.57. The offer will be based on education and experience, in alignment with the College’s compensation philosophy and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), if applicable.

Job Summary:

An employee in this classification performs work of moderate difficulty implementing academic programs for Upward Bound participants; coordinating selection and monitoring the participants’ academic progress. Work is distinguished by the ability to advise and counsel participants regarding academic requirements, standings and financial aid. General supervision is received from the assigned manager

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • 1. Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university; with two years experience in education and/or human services or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 2. Skill in developing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with internal and external customers
  • 3. Working skill in written and verbal communication
  • 4. Working skill in operating a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment as well as learning and adapting to new and updated programs and technology
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • 1. Masters degree.
  • 2. Good knowledge of community college counseling best practices.
Essential Duties:
  • 1. Coordinate educational support services (academic, financial, personal, social / cultural, and career related assistance) for eligible participants, ensuring participants receive all necessary information to succeed, while maintaining compliance with regulations of funding agencies and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • 2. Provide advice and counsel for Upward Bound participants regarding program academic requirements, standings, financial aid, etc.
  • 3. Assist with in-service activities and assessments for high need students, e.g., arrange for tutoring assistance and computer lab time/training.
  • 4. Coordinate personal growth opportunities (cultural, social, and personal) for students, and develop participants’ IEPs.
  • 5. Provide assistance to Upward Bound management in evaluation of activities.
  • 6. Assist management with writing and submission of grant proposals.
  • 7. Collect and maintain accurate participant data; run routine reports management.
  • 8. Maintains required training, licensure and/or certification
  • 9. Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to applicable privacy laws
  • 10. Demonstrates sensitivity, understanding and respect of diverse populations within the workplace
  • 11. Maintains an understanding of the work of colleagues to effectively provide back‑up and/or support for co‑workers during times when the division is short‑staffed or experiencing an increased volume of work.
  • 12. Adheres to department guidelines for attendance and punctuality.
Other Duties:
  • 1. Perform other job‑related duties as assigned which pertain to the job description.
  • 2. Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department.
