The Upper School English Language Arts teacher plans, organizes, and implements appropriate instructional programs in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Teaching a range of literary genres and modes of writing in thematically organized units tied together with guiding essential questions.
  • Planning and preparing learning activities for a balanced program of instruction and demonstration.
  • Providing an engaging environment and classroom culture for students to help them learn more effectively.
  • Developing learning strategies to support a range of students to achieve success.
  • Designing, adapting, and differentiating instruction to meet the student’s learning needs and interests.
  • Encouraging students' creative expression, incorporating student interests and passions, and developing critical thinking.
  • Implementing key components of a Groves Academy education, such as relationship development with students, knowledge of the student learning profiles, evidence-based decision-making, and differentiation.
  • Collaborating with team members, including teachers, advisors, Division Directors, the Upper School Counselor, parents, and School Administration to develop individualized student intervention plans.
  • Communicating with parents regularly by email or phone, conferences, and progress report writing.
  • Maintaining Google Classroom and updating the Alma gradebook weekly.
  • Upholding the Characteristics of Teacher Excellence at Groves Academy.
  • Participating in professional development.


Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provides information to supervisors, co-workers, and parents by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Attends annual training sessions as required.
  • Serves as an advisor to the US community
  • Performs miscellaneous projects and completes various tasks as requested by Division Directors (school events, field trips, study hall coverage)


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • BA/BS degree in English Education
  • One or more years of teaching in an educational institution
  • Experience teaching ELA in a high school setting
  • Experience working with students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and attention disorders

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the special needs of students.

  • Able to use appropriate technology, including MS Office software (Word and Excel), Internet, communication systems, online grading systems, and assistive technology.
  • Able to select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when teaching new things.
  • Able to clearly and effectively communicate information and ideas in writing, verbally, and through the use of technology.
  • Able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words, written material, multimedia, and audiovisual sources.
  • Understand and maintain the confidential nature of student, organization, and employee information, including HIPAA regulations.


Physical Requirements Necessary To Perform This Job

Incumbent must be able to:

  • Hear, speak, and effectively communicate in the English language, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization.
  • Sit at a desk for extended periods and perform long hours of work sitting at a computer.
  • Stand or sit for extended periods and perform long hours of work teaching in the classroom.
  • Apply manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer keyboarding and office equipment use, and to review detailed reports and information.
  • Move around the school, office area, playground, and field trip locations repeatedly throughout the day.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Staff members must be able to use computers, telephones, photocopiers, scanners, Smart Boards, adaptive equipment, and related office and educational equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is usually indoors; however, there is exposure to inclement weather when outdoors on school grounds or accompanying students on field trips.
