Overview: Dwight-Englewood School, the largest independent school in Bergen County, NJ, and a growing, vibrant, and diverse learning community in the New York City metro area, is seeking to fill an Upper School Art teaching position.
This is full-time position in art & design for someone with strong knowledge of both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional foundation studio arts, specifically onboarding art education with a passion for using the elements of art in drawing and the principles of design in sculpting. Focusing primarily on our Upper School, this position should be able to teach both foundation visual arts, which include drawing, painting, portraiture, and mixed media, as well as highly specialized graphic and industrial design skills via a year-long specialized survey course in design classes, including 3D printing and laser cutting. Therefore, the candidate should be well-versed in new technologies in graphic and industrial design, specifically Photoshop.
This position requires that the candidate maintain familiarity with the breadth of current art-related opportunities that exist in the 21st-century job market in media arts, such as illustration, 3D printing, laser-cutting, sculpture, and visual interface, multimedia, and information design, as well as the traditional foundation-building skill set of a studio practice and technique master
Essential Responsibilities
- Teaching multiple sections of Foundation Art (studio art 2D Fall and studio art 3D Spring) to primarily, but not limited to, 9th graders
- Teaching one one-year-long Graphic Design elective to 10th –12th graders;
- Teaching one semester of both Computer Art and Industrial Design to 10th–12th graders; OR
- Introduction to Architectural Design
- Ability to teach other art electives as needed
- Assist with department ordering and classroom studio preparation and weekly planning, and team-building meetings with other art teachers. Shared classroom maintenance.
- Ability to write evaluative comment narratives effectively, curricular updates, take feedback engage with a living scope and sequence
- Life-long learner of art education
- Actively support the Mission of the School and put that vision into daily practice.
- Highly effective at adapting to the instructional needs of students.
- Collaborative approach to working with students as well as faculty
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as lunch supervision, etc.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate must have a strong background in art education in regards to Drawing, painting, and sculpture, a general overview of graphic design; familiarity with computer literacy in the visual arts is essential, especially with Adobe Photoshop. Individuals who apply should be extremely responsible, organized, and highly motivated. An advanced degree and/or experience in teaching is preferred. Ability to demonstrate and maintain creative accomplishments and a professional practice at this level is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Drawing: specifically representational value drawing. Painting: specifically with watercolor and acrylic.
Sculpture: glyptic carving, additive modeling (clay), assemblage, found object, paper sculpture, mixed media, and experimental non-toxic materials.
Graphic Design: a strong sense of contemporary digital teaching tools and practices and utilizing real world examples and opportunities whenever possible; typography, composition, layout, poster design, illustration, iconography, semiotics, infographics with a cursory introduction to design branches such as fashion, print media, psychology of persuasion, industrial, product, environmental, sustainability, prototyping, etc;
Industrial Design: model-making, cursory architectural maquettes, 3d printing on a MakerBot, laser-cutting, photo-editing, and digital illustration on Adobe Photoshop.
Position Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred), in art or related field
- Minimum 2 years experience working with children in a school environment, preferably 6th-12th graders
- Personal and professional alignment to the school’s mission, vision, and values.
- Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and anti-bias education in all aspects of the work with students, families, and colleagues.
Terms Of Employment
- This is a full-time teaching position.
- Teachers commit to eight-hour workdays as well as attendance at faculty meetings and other school-wide meetings and events.
- Professional days are considered workdays and participation in planned activities is mandatory.
