Job description

This position performs police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations on the UNA campus. Employees in this job classification perform police and patrol work in accordance with federal, state, county and municipal laws as well as university rules and regulations. Work normally consists of routine patrol, preliminary investigations, traffic-control duties, maintenance of order and observing for irregular activities. Persons selected for this position are police officers and must comply with all rules, regulations, and policies of the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC).

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Valid driver’s license required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals with diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to readily acquire considerable knowledge of the buildings and grounds patrolled and of the rules and regulations pertaining to traffic and parking on the campus;
  • Ability and alertness in observing unusual or suspicious conditions, and in reporting such conditions to proper authority without delay;
  • Ability to carry out simple oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to use firearms as required;
  • Ability to enforce traffic and parking regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality;
  • Knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures and ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations;
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with students;
  • Ability to prepare reports;
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations;
  • Ability to project a good image for the university;
  • Skill in investigating complaints, disturbances, etc.
