Job summary

Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH is seeking a Unit Coordinator to support nursing staff by handling secretarial tasks, patient flow, and chart management on a 24-hour work week schedule.

The role requires a high school diploma and CPR certification, with preferred completion of a unit coordinator course and prior healthcare experience. Day shift, 0.6 FTE, with every third weekend and holiday rotation.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • CPR certification (BLS-Health Care Provider) is required.
  • Prior health care experience is preferred.
  • Completion of a unit coordinator or clerk course is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Operates communication systems including telephone, paging, pneumatic tube, and other devices.
  • Assists with greeting, admission, registration, transfer, transport, and discharge of patients.
  • Maintains unit and office supplies, ordering and stocking as needed.
  • Ensures unit areas and rooms meet regulatory standards.
  • Acts as a preceptor for orientation and training of Unit Coordinator staff.
  • Coordinates transport of non-controlled medications from Pharmacy to practitioners or to secured storage.
  • Initiates Code Blue/Medical Assist/ACT and communicates required information to staff.

Job Description Summary

Performs secretarial and environmental activities using current technology under the direction and supervision of RN.

Essential Functions
  • Monitors and maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Operates communication systems including but not limited to telephone, paging system, pneumatic tube, and other advanced communication technology devices.
  • Assists with greeting, admission, registration, transfer, transport, and/or discharge of patients as assigned.
  • Maintains unit and office supplies, ordering and stocking as needed.
  • Ensures unit areas and rooms are maintained according to regulatory standards.
  • Acts as a preceptor for orientation and training of other Unit Coordinator staff.
  • Coordinates the transport of non-controlled medications from Pharmacy to designated licensed healthcare practitioners or from tube system to secured medication storage room.
  • Initiates Code Blue/Medical Assist/ACT in emergency situations and ensures the communication of all required information to the appropriate staff.
Education Requirement

High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Successful completion of an approved unit coordinator or clerk course, preferred.

Certifications

Current CPR certification (BLS-Health Care Provider), required.

Skills
  • Basic computer and technology skills required.
  • Excellent customer service, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience

Previous health care experience, preferred.
