Job summary

SSA Marine in Tacoma, WA seeks an Operations Labor Manager to direct and coordinate union labor, equipment, and resources, ensuring safe, efficient performance and cost-effective operation. Based at the Tote terminal, the role may require travel to other SSA Marine sites.

You will manage hiring, deployment, and evaluation of labor personnel; interpret collective bargaining agreements; lead safety meetings and ensure regulatory compliance; and report production and safety data.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; equivalent management experience considered.
• Minimum 3 years managing union labor in a comparable environment.
• Valid Driver's License and ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
• Current CPR certification.
• Working knowledge of terminal operations, cargo stowage and stability, and local union dispatching rules.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
• Familiarity with computerized terminal operating systems.
• Knowledge of applicable safety and accident-prevention codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate hiring, assignment, direction, evaluation, discipline, and termination of assigned labor personnel.
• Direct and assigns the work of foremen, supervisory clerks, and other personnel based on needs.
• Maintain knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and ensure proper interpretation and enforcement.
• Investigate workplace incidents and safety violations; prepare reports and escalate as needed.
• Travel and assist other SSA Marine operations as required.
• Determine workforce composition and equipment needs to execute plans safely and within budget.
• Manage deployment of labor and equipment, monitor productivity, and implement corrective actions.
• Review operational documentation and verify equipment readiness; ensure safety and compliance.
• Plan and conduct daily safety meetings; address hazards and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure PPE usage and a respectful, non-discriminatory work environment.
• Coordinate with vessel personnel, customers, agents, and staff; troubleshoot systems and data reporting.
• Complete and submit shift production, payroll, safety, and damage reports on time.
