Job description

The Doctors Company is seeking an Underwriting Analyst to join our Custom Accounts Underwriting team. This is a remote opportunity or may report to one of our offices depending on the final candidate's location from the company's offices.

The Doctors Company Underwriting Group is focused on offering coverage to the medical malpractice insurance industry's most complex risks. We are a cohesive and dynamic team that applies creative and flexible underwriting solutions to meet all challenges presented by the changing healthcare environment. Our underwriting appetite includes primary and/or excess coverage, loss-sensitive programs with multi-state capabilities on an admitted basis, and more.

Position Mission

Evaluate risks by analyzing exposures, losses, and coverage specifications within delegated authority. Responsibilities include reviewing underwriting information, rating, proposing, recommending, and documenting decisions. Support Custom Account underwriters with day-to-day operations and manage a book of business. Interpret policy forms and endorsements, effectively communicating coverage applications or required actions. Handle special projects as assigned by Underwriting managers.

Qualifications
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • INS, RPLU or CPCU designation, or progress in obtaining such as designation, is preferred
  • Familiar with internal insurance company operations; able to coordinate billing questions, research Patient Compensation Fund, and claims inquiries.
  • Able to learn and work with an Actuarial experience rating model.
  • Understands basic concepts of insurance policy terms, coverage, forms & filings
  • At least 2 years of experience in Claims, Underwriting, insurance agency, and/or Compliance in Insurance or Financial Services preferred.
  • Excellent math, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Intermediate or advanced Excel skills.
  • Proficiency in using computer information systems and various software applications (Teams, SharePoint, PowerBI, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Able to handle incoming calls, identify caller's needs, clarify information, research issues, and provide solutions or alternatives.
  • Follows directions and department procedures with high detail and accuracy.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to self-direct and work independently.

Responsibilities

Production and Task Management
  • Initiate pre-renewal communications with internal teams and brokers, including file setup, tracking regulatory notices, and prepping accounts for underwriting workflow.
  • Gather underwriting information to evaluate risks within company guidelines.
  • Analyze and summarize loss and exposure information on individual risks, taking appropriate action.
  • Research and answer inquiries related to coverages, forms and provide recommendations.
  • Draft quotes for underwriters based on individual risk characteristics.
  • Execute post-binding workflows, including file documentation, billing, and finalizing internal transactions.
  • Handle policy processing/transactions for new business, renewals and mid-term changes.
  • Enter data from insurance applications, underwriting correspondence, instructions, and credentialing requests into processing systems like Nova/Large Account Rating System, Duck Creek, and online rating tools or Actuarial workbook.
  • Maintain file documentation and organization according to guidelines.
  • Suggest process improvements to management.

Customer Satisfaction
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with agents/brokers, co-workers and members.
  • Responds to agents/brokers and members within company service standards.
  • Prioritize tasks to meet customer service standards and miscellaneous project due dates.

Underwriting Discipline
  • Adheres to established underwriting guidelines authority and filed rules and rates as approved by the various state insurance departments.
  • Evaluates new business submissions, renewals and policy change requests for their book of business resulting in underwriting decisions within their authority or recommendations for decisions exceeding their authority.
  • Maintains policy documentation in appropriate systems in accordance with storage guidelines.
  • Understands, researches and executes compliance for various Patient Compensation Fund (PCF) states (E.g., PA, KS, IN, etc.).
  • Understands and complies with state statutory requirements including policy language changes and notice requirements.

Other Duties to be Assigned
  • Works on various projects and assignments made by the Underwriting Manager.
  • Participates actively and provides updates to leadership on assigned projects within given deadlines.

Salary Range: $50,719 - $59,172

Compensation varies based on skills, knowledge, and education. We consider factors such as specialized skills, depth of knowledge in the field, and educational background to ensure fair and competitive pay.
