Shelter Insurance Companies seeks an Underwriter responsible for evaluating Personal Lines and Commercial Lines risks, communicating decisions, and mentoring underwriters. This role supports customers and partners and involves field visits.

The position is part of Haulers Insurance Company, a Shelter subsidiary; starting pay ranges from $55,993 to $69,422 and includes a broad rewards package. Eligible for health, retirement plans, and PTO benefits.

Qualifications

• Strong oral, written, and customer-centric communication skills for explaining underwriting decisions and company policies.
• Ability to analyze risk, exercise judgment, make decisions, manage workload, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively.
• Ability to operate computers, office equipment, internal systems, and external vendor websites and platforms.
• College-level industry or company coursework in general insurance, business, and communication is preferred.
• Exposure to Personal and Commercial Lines insurance, underwriting rules and rating manuals, and relevant laws is preferred.
• Undergraduate college degree or equivalent related experience is preferred.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate Personal Lines and Commercial Lines business for risk acceptability, classification, rating, coverage, and retention. Communicate decisions, support customers and business partners, conduct field visits, and mentor underwriters.
