Job Description

Purpose of the Job: Responsible for producing, underwriting, and retaining profitable business for the company. The Underwriter II position involves underwriting, maintaining, and growing the Ambridge portfolio in accordance with the business plan, strategy, authority levels, and regulatory environment. This position reports directly to the Vice President for the west region of GL.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Underwrite, maintain, and grow the Ambridge portfolio in accordance with the business plan, strategy, authority levels, and regulatory environment.
  2. Exhibit technical expertise by servicing new and existing clients through cross-selling opportunities, account development, execution of client requests, and problem solving based on Ambridge core values and standards.
  3. Manage the entire underwriting cycle for individual accounts and assist in the preparation and calculation of underwriting figures for the Business Plan.
  4. Gather and evaluate relevant underwriting and risk information independently; communicate findings and analysis to key staff and management.
  5. Initiate pricing discussions on new and renewal accounts; liaise with Actuarial and management to ensure competitive and profitable pricing.
  6. Negotiate and commit underwriting capacity financial arrangements in the best interest of the company, ensuring business is within underwriting capacity.
  7. Advise clients on policy coverages and policy contract wording.
  8. Ensure all submissions comply with regulatory guidelines.
  9. Participate in discussions on risks written by other offices within Ambridge.
  10. Establish and maintain knowledge of internal controls and procedures related to underwriting.
  11. Identify and raise issues with in-force accounts/risks; liaise with claims, legal, and loss control disciplines; recommend solutions to mitigate risks.
  12. Construct bespoke policy wordings and endorsements; recommend changes to terms and conditions when appropriate.
  13. Conduct research on specific accounts as needed.
  14. Travel to and lead or participate in client meetings, balancing costs with business needs.
  15. Maintain key client relationships critical to ongoing business success.
  16. Encourage dialogue with market practitioners to gain market insights.
  17. Identify exposure to loss and recommend appropriate pricing and coverages.
  18. Participate in hiring, training, and developing additional staff as needed.
  19. Work with leadership to identify improvements, create efficiencies, and improve margins.
  20. Ensure renewal expirations are managed to avoid coverage lapses.
  21. Investigate and reconcile financial inquiries related to policies.
  22. Contribute to research and development of new business.
  23. Prepare data for company reports and accounts.
  24. Accurately record risk, premiums, claims exposures, and aggregates for timely reporting.
  25. Present risks written at Referral and Peer Review meetings, articulating analytical underwriting decisions.

Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Candidates should have strong educational qualifications, progressing toward or holding a Bachelor’s degree, CPCU, or relevant insurance qualifications. They should possess broad knowledge of US E&S/Admitted Insurance property classes, understanding of the US legal and regulatory environment, and awareness of market trends. Skills required include independent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills, analytical and numerical skills, advanced IT proficiency, organizational skills, and relevant underwriting experience within general or commercial insurance. Experience with underwriting systems is also necessary.
