Job summary

Penn State University seeks highly motivated Systems Engineers to join the Systems Engineering Department in the Undersea Systems Office at ARL. You will develop complex physical undersea systems, including vehicles, sensors, and hardware/software technologies for defense applications.

The role spans concept definition, system architecture, subsystem integration, testing, and transition to fielded systems, with collaboration across Navy partners and program sponsors.

Qualifications

• Applying systems engineering to complex physical systems, preferably in defense, aerospace, maritime, or robotics domains.
• Experience collaborating in multi-disciplinary, team-oriented cultures.
• Ability to express ideas successfully to drive understanding.
• Past success in writing white papers or reports.
• Past success in leading or directing multi-disciplinary teams and contributing to project management.
• Past success in submitting technical proposals and white papers.

Responsibilities

• Translate stakeholder needs into system-level requirements and architectures
• Develop hardware-centric system concepts for undersea platforms and payloads
• Conduct system decomposition, interface definition, and integration planning
• Support model-based systems engineering (MBSE), system modeling, and hardware/software integration
• Develop verification and validation strategies, test plans, and test procedures for prototypes and fielded systems
• Participate in lab, dockside, and at-sea test events
• Collaborate with engineering teams, program sponsors, Navy partners, and program management
• Identify risks, develop mitigation strategies, and support lifecycle decision-making
• Organize and direct a multi-disciplinary and diverse engineering team (higher level positions)
