Job summary

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) seeks an Emergency Response Team (ERT) Field Technician for a part-time, non-benefitted role at SURF. This position requires 8–20 hours of scheduled ERT training each month and has no regular weekly schedule.

The role supports emergency medical response, rescue operations, fire mitigation, and health and safety inspections, contributing to SURF safety programs underground and on the surface. A pre-employment physical and FCE are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Certifications: National Registry or SD EMR/EMT/AEMT or Paramedic.
• Rope Rescue Technician and MSHA/OSHA training preferred.
• OSHA HAZWOPER or Hazmat training is desirable.
• Experience in mining, fire/rescue/EMS helpful.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) preferred.
• Prior military service is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Trains and operates under MSHA part 49 Mine Rescue and OSHA 1926.800 standards.
• Assist ERT Supervisor with training, documentation, and field operations.
• Operate rescue and safety equipment and conduct life safety inspections.
• Support underground and surface SURF safety programs and responses.
• Prepare materials, manage inventories, and ensure regulatory compliance.
