Job summary

The University of New England is seeking a Professional Academic Advisor to provide academic and pre‑professional advising to undergraduates. You will work with students in various settings to help them plan curricula, explore future professions, and prepare for professional school applications.

The role requires collaborating with undergraduate departments, tracking progress, and offering referrals and guidance throughout degree programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1–2 years of advising experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Positive and energetic demeanor.
  • Capacity to work with and understand undergraduates.
  • Experience collaborating with the health professions community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to work alternate hours to allow optimal student contact.
  • Comfortable with data systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and professional advising support in multiple settings and formats.
  • Collaborate with academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, Westbrook College of Health Professions, and the College of Business on general academic advising matters.
  • Know and communicate details of all undergraduate curricular requirements.
  • Provide information to students regarding future professions, including academics, field experience, and other opportunities relevant to their major.
  • Track student progress within academic programs and provide academic support and referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide information on all levels of preparation for admission to professional programs, including academics, field experience, and personal attributes.
  • Support students entering and working through the professional school application process.
  • Track and report admissions data for pre‑professional students.
  • Be available to meet with students one‑on‑one and in groups for advising.
  • Attend new‑student orientation, open house, and recruitment events as needed.
  • Provide faculty, department chairs, and academic deans with updates regarding advisement of first and second‑year students.
  • Assist with website and social media in collaboration with the academic departments.
  • Provide academic advising at all orientation sessions.
  • Disseminate information on UNE policies and procedures related to degree completion.
  • Provide academic information to prospective students through admissions recruiting events, individualized appointments, and electronic means.
  • Provide referrals to academic departments, student support programs, and other university resources as necessary to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
