Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a PRN Ultrasound Technologist to provide diagnostic ultrasound services across departments as needed. The role requires independent operation of sonography equipment, collaboration with radiologists, and strict adherence to safety and disinfection protocols.

Candidates should have 0–3 years of relevant experience, BLS certification, and meet credentialing requirements (ARDMS/ARRT/CCI).

Qualifications

• 0–3 years of relevant ultrasound experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
• Must meet credentialing requirements per department: ARDMS/ARRT/CCI credentials; Breast ultrasound credentials if applicable; obtain within 12–18 months of hire.
• May require Indiana ISDH license.
• Ability to maneuver equipment and adjust positions for patient condition.

Responsibilities

• Provides diagnostic ultrasound services to generate images of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow.
• Operates sonographic equipment independently and adjusts settings for diagnostic quality.
• Collaborates with radiologists and healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information.
• Ensures patient safety and comfort, explains procedures, assists with positioning and equipment adjustments.
• Maintains familiarity with ultrasound scan protocols and disinfection practices.
• Provides intraoperative ultrasound as requested.

Job Duties, Tasks and Qualifications

Provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound to generate images of patients' internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. Responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment. Evaluates images for diagnostic quality and makes necessary adjustments to capture the best possible images. Collaborates with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information. Ensures patient safety and comfort during procedures by explaining the process, positioning patients correctly, and adjusting equipment as needed. Familiar with current scan protocols. Maintains compliance with high level disinfection practices. Assists with minimally invasive procedures as needed. Possesses familiarity with ultrasound contrast indications and administration practices. Provides intraoperative ultrasound as requested.

• Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
• Requires ability to maneuver equipment and improvise positions when the condition of the patient does not permit routine positioning.
• For ACR accredited ultrasound departments. Requires active status through one of the following: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS): Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Abdomen, RDMS(AB), Obstetrics & Gynecology, RDMS(OB/GYN), or Pediatric Sonography, RDMS(PS), and/or Registered Vascular Technologist - Vascular Technology , RVT(VT); American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT): Registered Technologist - Sonography, RT(S) or Vascular Sonography, RT(VS) ; or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI): Registered Vascular Sonographer, RVS; as required by facility accreditation, if applicable. Exception: if performing breast ultrasound only, must obtain credential through American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS): RDMS(BR); or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT): Registered Technologist - Sonography & Breast US, RT(S)(BS), or Radiography , Mammography & Breast Ultrasound, RT(R)(M)(BS); within 18 months of hire.
• For non-ACR accredited ultrasound departments. Requires candidates to meet one of the two following conditions: Must be actively pursuing ultrasound education and have already passed the ARDMS physics boards, or must have graduated from an ultrasound education program. Requires certification through one of the methods mentioned in the accredited section above within 12 months of hire.
• May be required to meet registry/certification requirements for another modality, if applicable.
• May require license from Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), if applicable.
