Job summary

United Hospital Center is seeking a Sterile Processing support team member to assist the Sterile Processing department. You will clean autoclaves, organize instruments, and help maintain a safe, orderly SPD and OR environment.

The role requires a high school diploma and BLS/HeartSaver certification within 30 days. You will also assist with inventory, supplies, and basic clerical duties as needed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Cleans Autoclaves in Sterile Processing and Operating Room areas.
• Places unused sterile instrumentation and soft goods back to the correct location.
• Cleans washers, cart washers, dryers, shelving and equipment per policy.
• Maintains Sterile Processing areas for cleanliness and order.
• Assists in inventory control and supplies for surgical cases.
• Removes out-of-date items and records and discards or reprocesses per guidelines (color discernment).
• Monitors supply levels (et. cast cart, trauma cart, suture packs).
• Maintains a clean, safe environment in SPD and OR.
• Prepares cleaning and lubricating solutions for decontamination.
• Operates washer/sterilizer and other cleaning equipment.
• Wraps instruments for sterilization with proper labeling (color-coded).
• Processes OR linen and sterile packs.
• Keeps halls clear for equipment transport and maintains work area for next shift.
• Assists with clerical tasks and calls as needed.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Cleans Autoclaves in Sterile Processing and Operating Room areas.
• Places unused sterile instrumentation and soft good items back in the appropriate location when returned from the Operating Room.
• Cleans washers, cart washer, dryers, shelving and other equipment as assigned in accordance with Manufacturers recommendation and departmental policy.
• Cleans and organizes Sterile Processing areas as assigned.
• Assists in the maintenance of inventory control system.
• Assists personnel in obtaining supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical cases
• Removes out-of-date items and records and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines and is able to discern and distinguish colors.
• Monitors level of supplies (et. cast cart, trauma cart, CUT suture packs). Often identification is by color of supply and the employee is able to discern and distinguish colors.
• Assists in maintaining a clean, sanitary and safe environment in both SPD and OR.
• Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of various equipment and supplies in designated areas.
• Processes instruments between cases (wash and sterilize by heat or cold sterilization) as the need arises.
• Prepares various cleaning and lubricating solutions used in the decontamination of instruments, equipment, and rooms.
• Operates washer/sterilizer, or flash sterilizer, and various other cleaning apparatus in the OR and Sterile Processing properly.
• Wraps instruments and supplies for sterilization labeling appropriately labeling appropriately with color appropriate labels.
• Processes OR linen and sterile packs.
• Monitors halls keeping them free of extra equipment allowing for easy equipment transportation.
• Cleans and prepares work area for next shift.
• Cleans the scrub sinks in the OR and helps to assure the hand washing supplies are readied for use.
• Documents appropriately to foster the work of the department.
• Assists Sterile Processing team by performing tasks such as answering telephone, and minor clerical duties in the designated area monitored by supervision.
• Runs errands as directed in a timely manner.

• Must be physically capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
